Scott Pruitt EPA replacement Andrew Wheeler won't be any better for environment, green groups say
NBCNews ^ | July 5, 2018 | James Rainey and Leigh Ann Caldwell

Green groups cheered the resignation Thursday of Scott Pruitt, saying the Environmental Protection Agency administrator’s multiple ethical lapses and pro-polluter tilt made him unsuitable for the nation’s highest environmental post.

But the activists doubted that the departure, announced by President Trump via Twitter, would change the administration's policies. The EPA will now be led by an interim chief, Andrew Wheeler, who was a coal industry lobbyist before he was confirmed as Pruitt's deputy in April.

Pruitt’s tenure was marked by more than a dozen investigations into alleged conflicts of interest and controversial spending of taxpayer funds — ranging from his use of an outsized security detail, to his scheduling of numerous expensive foreign trips, to his acceptance of what appeared to be a below-market condominium rental connected to a lobbyist.

I hope Mr. Wheeler dismantles the EPA faster and more thoroughly than Mr. Pruitt did.

They had all that stuff before the EPA was around. Did everybody die?

If you look back into the history of these groups and their ties to Marxist fronts and causes, I’d say that they should change their name from “Greens” to “Reds”.

Ever some former creators of environmental groups, esp. the Sierra Club, have denounced these groups as environmental extremists and anti-capitalism.

This GREEN LEFT, as a whole, is a threat to America’s well being. There are some smaller organizations that actually promote sane, pragmatic approaches to environmental problems, but they don’t make policy at the national level.

Just in case any leftists reading FR want to condemn us as “ecofascists”, I was a member of the American Museum of Natural History, Maryland Academy of Sciences/Archaeology, the National Wildlife Federation(where my wife once worked), and local nature organizations, since the 1950’s.
Oh, and as a Cub Scout, we helped to clean up the rivers and streams, officially and unofficially.

I know that many other civic organizations have been doing this type of work without a lot of publicity or funding for decades. They are the real environmental heros, not the “john-come-lately” radicals with their foundation grounds and fancy offices.

I really hate that he’s leaving so soon after being harassed by that teacher; now she’ll be held up as some hero of the Left and given credit for dealing the last blow.

What did people do before Nixon founded the EPA in December 1970?

Laws were enforced. But you did not have a giant activist bureaucracy with unlimited resources to make mischief and punish the enemies of the Left.

Precisely. They had a huge campaign to smear Pruitt. Ok, so you won. He’s gone. Now you have a guy who will gut the place. Well done green weenies. You “won”.

You are so right. There is a valid function here that we had better not throw away. The climate change idiots have done so much damage.

The rivers and waters were far more polluted in Nixon’s time than they are now. The extremists and the left have poisoned every useful thing that was done to clean up the environment.

And, unlike his predecessor, he knows that everything he does will be put under a microscope. If anyone was assigned to keeping Pruitt out of ethics trouble, he should be fired. I’ve seen Republican after Republican needlessly fall for these snares.

Very happy.

Trump is helping the global environment by moving production back to the United States from countries that cause a lot more pollution.

A lot of people did. Look at the Love Canal. Skyrocketing cancer rates. Air quality improvement in Southern California since I was a kid here — when you sometimes couldn’t see more than ten blocks away — has reduced all kinds of problems. This is serious stuff.

I grew up in LA in the 60’s. You could see the hills maybe three times a year. Still live here and now you can see them every day. Big reduction in respiratory problems with the cleaning up of the air. Change all started with Nixon & EPA. Human nature: if it’s cheaper to let the poison into the air than treat or contain it, they’ll do it. Somebody’s gotta be that cop.

Cancer rates are still skyrocketing now. The cleanup of many problems was already happening before the EPA existed. I have read prices stating that the EPA actually slowed progress. Every state has an EPA equivalent agency and that is where 90%+ of this issue should be handled. I suspect the Colorado state agency would not have caused the disaster at the Gold King mine that the EPA caused purely through their stupidity.
