The local kids here are completely unskilled. They don't wrench on things and have never had to do chores. I hire them but it's really rough going.
I am one of the few guys in my neighborhood who still does his own yard work. I do it partly to keep from turning into a couch potato. I also take some pride in the work. I have a really old Mclane edger that leaves a razor-sharp edge, and I then use a blower/vac to blow and then vacuum up stray grass clippings. None of the Mexican crews pay as much attention to detail as I do, and they usually blow the clippings into the street for some other gringo to worry about. I also do not cut my (St. Augustine) grass very short. I keep my blade set pretty high (2-1/2 or 3, I can't remember) and usually have to mow every 5 days, depending on how much rain we get.
There was a time about 20 years ago in which I paid some neighbor boys (brothers in high school) to do my yard work for about a month while I recuperated from a bad back pain episode, but that's the only time I've done that. Those fellas actually did a pretty good job.
Another huge downfall of eliminating ‘SHOP’ classes in high school.
