Excerpt from act The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 amends the federal criminal code to rewrite provisions relating to fraudulent claims about military service to subject to a fine, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both for an individual who, with intent to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefit, fraudulently holds himself or herself out to be a recipient of:

Medal of Honor (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard) Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, Air Force Cross, Silver Star, Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Combat Action Badge, Combat Medical Badge, Combat Action Medal, or any replacement or duplicate medal for such medal as authorized by law.

I would assume the intent for the show to make money would fall under the act.

Might fall under the Stolen Valor Act claiming to be a wounded veteran and therefore possessing a Purple Heart.

The article though is unclear if the interview he actually admitted to have been a recipient of one of the awards or was wearing a false medal.

The ones on the list most abused by veterans are one of the 5 Combat action awards. A phony Purple Heart claim is fairly easy to debunk thru an archives FOIA request or Purple Heart registry, but not the combat awards.

You can be a disabled veteran without any awards, Case in point: My foster brother received 60% disability rating and benefits and a disabled license plate. He wrecked his motorcycle on base and received ‘service connection’ for his injuries. Sometimes things just aren’t always as they outwardly appear.
