I think as a businessman, Trump views the world in primarily economic terms. I think he believes, correctly, that military power generally follows, not precedes, economic power.

Assessing the world in those terms, it seems clear that the looming threat of the 21st century comes from China, not Russia. And that America needs to become leaner and meaner economically, in order not to fall behind in the economic competition with China.

Hence the so-called trade war with China.

Given that assumption, it makes sense to seek rapprochement with Russia. Just as Nixon opened up relations with China, to help America contain the threat of Russia, now it makes sense for Trump to seek rapprochement with Russia, to help America contain the economic threat from China.

And, this also explains Trump’s attitude to the EU. From the economic point of view, their refusal to bear a fair share of defense spending constitutes a significant, but wholly unnecessary economic albatross around America’s neck.
