A fiscal 2019 spending measure was introduced in the House on Wednesday that provides $5 billion for a southern border wall and additional funding for border security that aims to achieve 100 percent scanning of the border within five years.
The Homeland Security appropriations subcommittee measure would fund more than 200 miles of new physical barrier construction along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The legislation also includes $223 million to add 375 additional border patrol agents above the Trump administration request, including 140 canine teams, that, according to the House Appropriations Committee, will initiate a five-year strategy toward achieving 100 percent scanning on the southern border.
The measure increases the budget for Immigration and Customs Enforcement by $328 million over fiscal 2018. Of that new funding, $78 million is allotted for the hiring of 400 additional ICE agents and support staff.
The funding far exceeds the $1.6 billion for border security that Congress passed in the fiscal 2018 spending measure and it goes a long way toward achieving President Trumps top campaign promise to secure the border with a wall.
The funding plan is guaranteed to draw fierce opposition from Democrats, who not only oppose border wall funding but have worked to prevent funding for additional Border Patrol and ICE agents.
Some Democratic lawmakers and candidates for Congress have called for abolishing ICE. Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has called for overhauling ICE and has worked to prevent spending bills from including money for new agents or border wall funding.
But Republicans said Tuesday that the agents and and wall are needed to stop the flow of drugs and gangs across the southern border.
Cartels are trafficking $64 billion a year in drugs and people across our border and much of it comes through one small stretch at the Rio Grande Valley,...

100% scanning in 5 years! WTH? I guess in the intervening years nothing bad will happen. Dumbasses need to fast track this effort and quit screwing around. Grrrrrrrr!
$700k for each new border patrol agent?
Spread over how many years?
Nothing has been done for 50 years. If we can achieve 100% scanning in just 5 years from now, it will be a miracle.
We need to stop the illegal immigrants and the drug traffic.
“100% scanning in 5 years! WTH?”
It says within 5 years. Sounds like a stall but get the right people on it and it could be done in 1. Get the funding then start working on the acceleration. Same with the wall. Get the funding and go to work immediately. Trump knows how to get building projects done ahead of schedule.
I would imagine there is gear involved in that number (more ATV’s, rifles, trucks, surveillance gear, etc..). What are they supposed to do once hired and there is no gear for them to use? Sit in the office all day?
no, 5 billion is not the full amount . We want the full amount or our president has assured us that he will “shut the government down”to get the wall. That means ALL THE WALL, You weren’t listening!!
This has to reconciled with the Senate version. So it is likely to end up between 0 to 200 miles of strong new barrier.
If it is approved in full (200 miles worth), it would follow the Bush era barrier ramp up - 100 miles first year. 200 miles second year, and 300 miles the third year. Both the Government and the Contractors need some time to ramp up. This rate of increase is manageable, without risking big over payments.
The big differences would be the much bigger and stronger barrier, the better patrol roads, and way better technology (cameras, sensors, alarms, AI monitoring software).
Wondering why they can put up a healthy chunk of razor wire along the border in the interim.
There, fixed it fir yah...
lol! That’d be almost as fast as jer brown’s high speed rail to no place with no passengers.
Also going to need extra holding facilities for the arrestees.
Mine field and automatic turrets would be cheaper in the long run. And send the right message to boot.
Preachin' to the choir, pal! I've talked "wall" for over twenty years now.
Make sure to price in the look-out towers.
all democrats quickly agreed.
