And that is why we have statutes of limitations. And jury trials. And the presumption of innocence, and the requirement to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Good Lord ... if all we have is "Smith says Jones committed unspeakable acts" forty years ago and "Jones denies any such thing occurred" ...
I'm going with Jones. An accusation is not evidence. Prove it.
EXACTLY - that’s my point. It can be ANY of us. All it takes is someone with a grudge, or someone playing a ‘practical’ joke, and our lives are ruined. Think about it, there are 80 million or so women in the country who hate Trump, probably 10,000 of them can make a credible claim of having been reasonably close to him (working for one of his companies, etc.). Of those, especially in NYC, 9,000 hate him as a politician and potential president (they loved working for him, though). Then 20 of them decide to make up crap about him, and he’s SUNK as a candidate?
What about the next guy who runs as a Republican, or even a Democrat. Drag out 20 people who don’t like him from his past and sink him too? Clarence Thomas, anyone?
That’s why I will NEVER believe any of this crap without EVIDENCE from that time period, such as police reports, court records, or other real-time complaints. Sure the guy may have been a monster, our justice system is designed to protect the ones that are not monsters, and if people who have a motive to take down others make that claim, they sure as hell better be able to back it up, and if they don’t appear to have a motive, I still won’t believe them, years later - because they may have a motive that I’m not aware of.
