If the Russians had a choice they would have picked Hillary since they were already running a tab with her and her policies would weaken the country. They also wanted chaos so they wanted an election a lot closer than the polling made it look like in the fall of 2016. The best would have been Hillary winning the electoral vote and President Trump winning the popular vote leaving a lot of bitterness and questions about the election. Throw some accusations of cheating to make the Hillary presidency even more illegitimate and the Russians would have been in heaven.
But a Trump win? Unexpected, unplanned for and probably undesirable for the Russians.
