I believe that most LEOs and a vast majority of non-LE shooter types would not be able to hit the head or most any exposed portion of a hostage-taking perp. Even fewer when the chips are down. Agree, One shot was needed, not a fusillade of almost randomly fired bullets ( even though a handgun round is 25% fatal on any given hit) 18 rounds and some number of combined hits add up quickly.
18 rounds fired in such a situation bespeaks of dispassionate and complete regard for human life. I don’t think “but yer honor, we killed the bad guy, stopping him from hurting the woman any further” “ the regrettable death of the hostage is a tragedy, but we stopped the bad guy from harming anyone else too, give us a break”.
Recently, a man shot the perp holding his wife hostage in his driveway with one shot, maybe the cops ought to ask him how.... Who knows, maybe he was a bullseye pistol shooter....but I doubt it.
If you see a bunch of cops pointing a gun at someone, are you going to stay anywhere near that guy?! The innocent bystander actually has some culpability, in my view, for not getting the h*ll out of there. Did she really need to be told?
It looks like the officer on the right is the one who killed the hostage. I think she took one to the head.
I agree on all points. Randomly putting rounds downrange at a singular perpetrator is one thing. When he’s holding a woman hostage bs stupid, bordering in criminal.
I won’t say it’s criminal because I don’t know all the details beyond the article and don’t make it a point to speculate.
I’m not ashamed to say I’m in the vast non-LEO majority. I enjoy shooting and am a NRA rifle instructor, but make no claim to be any good. I’m truly a sport shooter.

Watch the damn video! The point is that THEY ALL did stay close to the guy with the knife as though they were immune from danger. There was a guy in a wheelchair there and the incompetent cops let them all just stand there instead of telling them to move far away from the situation. Obviously the woman was frozen in fear and her fears were realized due to the gross incompetence of these cops. She needed a calm, reassuring voice telling her to move towards a spot the cops deemed safe. Instead she got a bullet to the head.
“Agreed, cops should have powned him the moment he refused to drop the knife.”
Not authorized under the “Officer Friendly” Operations Manual being used in most urban departments.
I could have made that shot with an assault weapon.
I agree with a few here, shoot him before he engages with a hostage. This is why the police shoot when they have a chance of stopping the criminal and minimizing civilian causalities.
Wish I could see it but you have to create an account.
Incompetence all the way around.
Dead civilians on the ground.
All the cops get to go home, rest up, and do it all again tomorrow.
No one can ever please a cop-hater.
Whoever shot the civilian needs to go to prison, and the rest of them should be fired and never work in law enforcement again. Gross incompetence....
Uh huh. Looks not so bad, but, just to make it realistic, run 500 yards in duty gear, after having 5 cups of caffeine and a few whacks to the head just for giggles to simulate adrenaline and fear and tension, oh, yeah, then have the target bobbing and weaving around while you squint at the front sight....
18 shots?
A few years back, the officers would not have felt the need to shout "DROP THE KNIFE!!!" 57 times. Three would have been enough before they shot him.
By being overly cautious, they used the "bean bags" - which gave the Hispanic psycho enough time to take a hostage and start sawing through her throat. Then, the hostage was killed when they finally opened fire.
Got her !!!
