CBS News has learned the number of people caught illegally crossing the United States' northern border is up 142 percent. Border Patrol agents apprehended 445 people entering the U.S. from Canada during the first six months of 2018; that compares with 184 during the same period last year.
The northern border is very easy to cross, which was actually the original intention. But it also makes it very difficult to secure.
An unguarded metal fence is the only thing keeping smugglers from entering a remote corner of New York State – a small part of the physical security infrastructure along America's northern border.
Norm Lague, the Border Patrol agent in charge here, says it's impossible to cover 100 percent of the entire 5,525-mile-long U.S.-Canadian border, the longest and busiest land boundary in the world.
"It's a tough challenge to go ahead and take the limited resources we have and work in such a vast area," Lague told correspondent Don Dahler
About 400,000 people and more than 1.6 billion in goods legally cross the border every day.
Last year, Border Patrol agents along the northern border apprehended 3,027 people who were in the country illegally. By comparison, agents along the southern border captured more than 300,000.
"The northern border is much more vast," said Lague. "The terrain is very difficult to work in, and we do not have the resources at our disposal that the southern border has," said Lague.
Notably, of those apprehended along the northern border, nearly half (1,489) were from Mexico. Mexican citizens don't need a visa to enter Canada, and one-way flights to Toronto and Montreal only cost about $300. Once there, Border Patrol agents say, they can slip into the U.S.

Ultimately. Or perhaps actually enforce eVerify enough that it becomes damn near impossible to work here. Or make it impossible to get government benefits. Or make it impossible to buy groceries. Lots of options, but I’d go for 2 walls also.
Clearly it’s because Mexicans are afraid that if they come to Amerigo they will become separated from their kids who will be put into cages like small dogs. Because that’s what people on tv cry about over here.
How this irrational fear translates into even more illegal Mexicans I don’t know.

We better get a handle on the illegal invastion and soon, or it will be too late.
This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
Look at the US-Canada border in these states - Minnesota, North Dakota and eastern Montana. With exception of northeastern Minnesota where the terrain is close to wilderness-like with lots of water obstacles, the rest of the border is relatively flat.
Patrolling it is almost impossible. A wall or barrier would be doable though. one good thing though is that the population in those areas is heavily white. Anyone Hispanic or Arabic-looking would be spotted easily.
To show you how much has changed, in 1979, four of us drove up to Winnepeg in the winter to see the total eclipse of the sun. We got to the border at 6 am, and we found out it didn’t open until 9am, which meant we would have missed the eclipse. We knocked on all the windows and doors, but no answer.
So we moved the three orange cones blocking the road, drove through and put the cones back. We stopped at a diner on the way up, and though everybody there knew the border hadn’t opened yet, no one said a thing about that, only things about the eclipse and the weather. On the way back, the Canadians looked at us, our telescopes and our drivers licenses and waived us back into the US, no problem.
We would be the subjects of a large manhunt if we did that now.
Also have noticed an increase in violent crimes.
