Record 63,880 people murdered in Brazil in 2017

The number of murders in Brazil increased by by 3 percent to a record high of 63,880 in 2017, according to data released by the Brazilian Public Security Forum Thursday.

The data showed that 175 people were murdered each day and an overall murder rate of 30.8 per 100,000 people, up from 29.9 in 2016.

An average of 14 people were killed in interactions with police, up 20 percent from 2016.

Rapes also increased by 8 percent to to 60,018 and murders of women rose 6.1 percent to 4,539.

"It is a devastating scenario," director of the Brazilian Public Security Forum Renato Sérgio de Lima told The Guardian. "The numbers show we have a serious problem with lethal violence."

Lima added most of the victims were young, black men and outdated laws and police procedures along with the rise of organized crime contributed to the increased murder rate.

In an attempt to combat the murders Brazil seized 119,484 firearms, 94.9 percent of which weren't registered in the federal police system.

Santa Catarina state police sergeant Elisandro Lotin said not enough murderers are imprisoned and police focus on repressing criminals rather than preventing violent crimes.

"There is an impunity about homicide crimes in Brazil," Lotin told The Guardian.

The forum's data showed there were 689,947 people in Brazil's penitentiary system and 39,516 in police custody.

If only Brazil had strong gun control.

Oh. Wait....

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_Brazil

...the Brazilian Department of Justice (Ministério da Justiça), which performs each individual's mandatory background check (which is made prior every gun acquisition, and every three years after it is acquired, which allows gun confiscation at the discretion of authorities), have been forbidding almost every citizen from buying guns, based on the Executive Order # 5.123, of 07/01/2004 (Decreto n.º 5.123, de 1º de julho de 2004), which allows the Federal Police to analyze the given reasons for owning a gun, under which "self defense" is not considered a valid reason because there are allegedly sufficient public police officers to maintain nationwide security.

Thus, disarmament is effectively happening in Brazil, as are massive gun confiscations...

Ah but it wasn’t officially the government that did it so it’s acceptable.

The 68,000 people would still be alive IF they had had PRINTED PISTOLS: It is worth noting that both Disqus and Fakebook CENSOR any mention of a website, www.CodeIsFreeSpeech.com that provides FREE downloads of 3D-printable firearm blueprints. Are their soccer players kneeling for their anthem?

Putting these numbers together and extrapolating them into the future, it looks like an average Brazilian male has about a 4% chance of being murdered in his lifetime.

Chicago peaked in 1992 at 34 murders per 100,000. So the whole country of Brazil is only slightly safer than the city of Chicago at its worst.

It doesn't appear that that did any good at all! A waste of police resources.

Some years ago (about 15 years) we spent time in Brazil. On our last full day there we took a day tour of a National Park near Rio called Tejuca National Park.

It was a very nice park located on one of the many hillsides (mountainsides?) around Rio and as we ascended the hillside the tour guide directed our attention to a nearby hillside littered with ramshackle shacks. She said it was a "favela" and that it was so dangerous the Brazilian Army doesn't attempt to enter it even in daylight!

Brazil has it’s fair share of race-relation problems.
Poor Blacks inhabit mostly the northern part of the country, and rich Whites the middle and mostly south. Rio is a complete war zone. But no they don’t kneel for their anthem before games ironically enough. LOL!

There’s a sizable community of Ex-Confederates there too. At least they don’t equate the Rebel Flag down there with “Racism”.
