This is exclusive, and heart breaking for me and for the family and friends of the great Aretha Franklin. She is gravely ill in Detroit. The family is asking for prayers and privacy.

Originally diagnosed with cancer in 2010, Aretha, who turned 76 in March, bravely battled back and refused to be knocked out by illness. Her last performance as on November 2, 2017 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation in New York. Her final public performance was at Philadelphia’s Mann Center in August 2017. It was a miraculous show as Aretha was already then fighting exhaustion and dehydration.

Aretha is surrounded by family and people close to her. She will be so missed as a mother, sister, friend, cousin. But her legacy is larger than life. It’s not just that Rolling Stone called her the number 1 singer of all time, or that she is the Queen of Soul. Long live the Queen.

More to come…

I don’t think Franklin will be alive much longer. :-(

I thought she was a gonner when she was diagnosed seven years ago.

A true American treasure. I will pray she goes as peacefully as my parents did.

Before some dolt starts in about how she was a “leftist tool” for attending Obama’s inauguration (and that HAT!), let me say that her talent transcended all races and like the Motown artists and other black artists from the 60s, she used her talent and fame to create unity and eliminate racism (in contrast to what is going on today).

RESPECT is earned, and the Queen of Soul has most definitely earned it.

Saw her at Wolf Trap twelve years ago. She was HUGE, but she still had the voice.

I would never say that. It was an historic event, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. She was invited, and graciously accepted.

Compare that to snotty members of sports teams to turn-down White House invitations just to score points with The Resistance. Some things should rise above partisan politics.

Plus as a Black American who was alive during the Jim Crow era, she likely never thought she would live long enough to see a Black President. Such a shame he did such a lousy job of representing.

She was great in the Blues Brothers.

She was great, Period. IMHO.

Although, the Blues Brothers setting let her do her thing with informal humor rather than glitzy staging. BTW, the guy who played her BF, "Guitar Murphy", died recently, in June. His real name was Matt Murphy.
