Floridians go to the polls for their midterm primaries in two weeks, and the electorate looks surprisingly the same as it did two or four years ago. Despite predictions of a blue wave in this purple state based on reaction to Donald Trump and the disaster response in Puerto Rico, Democrats didnt make any gains in their share of the electorate. In fact, as Politicos Marc Caputo reports, they lost ground:
Last week we wondered wheres the blue wave? when Democratic absentee ballot returns werent as proportionately high as they were at this time of the election in 2014, the last midterm. Today, we begin to wonder even more now that the state has released the final numbers of registered voters for the August 28 primaries. The numbers show that, as a share of the electorate, Democratic Party registrations have fallen about 2 percentage points since the 2016 election (to roughly 37 percent). Registered Republicans have held steady at 35 percent. And no-party-affiliation voters have increased about 3 points. True, Democrats have won four contested bellwethers this cycle in Florida. But so far, theres not a crush of people rushing to become Democrats.
Analysts predicted a much bigger bump in the Sunshine State, and not just from dissatisfaction from Trumps first two years as president. The disaster response in Puerto Rico has been a big controversy in the state among the substantial portion of the Hispanic demographic that Puerto Rico natives comprise. On top of that, the economic devastation presumably resulted in a flood of people moving into the state from Puerto Rico, and as American citizens they would be eligible to cast votes in the midterms. If that happened, however, they didnt register as Democrats:

*PING* to LS...
Dumb as dirt, Bill Nelson, is toast.
thank you. I will just caution though, it’s still all about Dem fraud and our turnout to over come it, regardless of registration numbers.
All we heard leading up to the 2016 election was how Dems had a huge registration lead in FLA thanks to Hispanics and Hillary lost. Also we’ve seen deep red districts barely put the R ahead of the dem or even lose in PA during these special elections.
It’s all about turnout.
Puerto Ricans know that it was the Democrat Party that laid the groundwork for the literal destruction of the entire island of Puerto Rico by their incompetence, crime and lack of true leadership.
Folks...Puerto Rico should be the shining gem of the Caribbean. It should be the number one Caribbean vacation destination. It’s not because of Democrat Party lack of leadership, direction and advancement for the the island and its people!!!
Puerto-Ricans, Democrats are far from being your salvation...you all have been screwed royally by your own leaders and Barack Hussein Obama!!! Wake up and dump the entire Democrat Party in Puerto Rico, New Jersey, New York, Florida, etc.
A vote cast for Democrat, Socialist, Communist, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a wasted, thrown away vote...period!!!
The ballots are still in an unmarked cars trunk waiting to be delivered as needed where needed .
Hope you're right. It would be great to send lockstep Bill into retirement. Unfortunately, the support Scott needs in conservative SW part of the state is taking a beating, just like the economy, from the red tide. The left, and their accomplices in the media, are doing all they can to lay this mess at Scott's feet.
Demonrats are going to have trouble getting their folks to the polls. Russians are to blame.
Doesn’t mean anything. Wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of dissatisfied Bernie-loving Dems re-registered as independents. Shades of the Tea Party movement, but far left. The closeness of the Wisconsin House special election is not encouraging.
Puerto Ricans may lean democrat but they sure aren’t commies. They know what Castro did in Cuba.
The Bolshevik woman Ocasio-Cortez is HALF Puerto Rican born in New York. She has NO coattails what-so-ever.
2014 Primary and 2018 primary compared
OH R 559,671 . . .834,967 R + 275,296 a 49% increase in R.
OH D 366,056 . . .260,629 D - 105,427 a 29% decrease in D.
GA R 596,218 . . .607,441 R + 11,223
GA D 304,243 . . .555,089 D + 250,846
The story in Ohio is totally opposite of the story in GA. Unemployed Democrats from the rustbelt cities are leaving OH for GA. That Ohio Republicans can increase by 275,296 is amazing from off-year to off-year election in state losing population.
GA has created 700,000 new jobs in the past 5 years, 3.5 years under Obama; 1.5 years under Trump. That 700,000 brought their families with them, like I did ... or my daughter did as she came to GA before I did.
GA is the story of Republicans and Conservatives asleep at the wheel of a well running machine. Nobody is approaching the new residents, the new voters, and asking them to consider why there are no jobs in rust belt cities and why there are jobs in red states. (Virtually all rustbelt refugees considered the options of TN, NC, GA, FL, TX and other red states prior to choosing one of them.)
GA Republicans still have a slight edge in those who vote in primaries. But there seems to be no effort to deal with the unintended consequences of creating so many jobs in Georgia.
I live with and work with these rust belt refugees. They are ready to leave the Democrat party ... if the other party would come across friendly to them. But the Republican party, and Conservative groups, seem awol.
Turnout will determine the Nov 2018 election. The odds are still with the Republicans. But the odds are close with a lot of undecided and the Republicans are doing nothing to reach the new voters.
Red tide has been occurring in west Florida since the 1800’s. I live in west Florida and haven’t heard anyone trying to blame Scott for it. That’s just nonsense and BS.
Being from the area, you know that SW Florida is heavily Republican. The red tide and lake Okeechobee problems are going to have a political impact, but no one knows at this point how much it will hurt Scott. But you'd have to be living under a rock to believe that no one is trying to blame Scott for the problem. It's a daily headline.
I live on the Space Coast and you are correct. It has been non stop, blame Scott for the red tide and the O Lake/algae problems. The left is going to double down on this all the way to November.
LMAO.
