In the late 80s there was a huge story in Boston about the murder of a pregnant woman named Carol Stuart. The husband said that a stranger approached their car and shot both of them. She was shot in the head,he had a non life threatening wound. She was brought to the ER where I worked...but on the evening shift (I worked days).
Next morning...staff lounge. The day shift staff are drinking coffee and talking waiting for the day shift to start.Of course everyone was talking about the woman and her child,as was the entire city.
The head nurse comes in and the first thing she says is "the husband did it".In unison we all responded "c'mon...no way!"
She was right.A few months later his brother, fearing a long prison stretch, told the cops that he helped his brother ditch the gun in the harbor.
Not too long after that the husband's car was found parked on a bridge and his body was found floating beneath it.
Forgot to mention...one of the nurses in the lounge that morning was doubling back from the evening shift and she said that it was the ugliest thing she ever saw...and she was a battle hardened big city ER nurse.
There were a couple of made-for-TV movies about this case. Her husband was a dog, and the angst he put the community and families through was unforgivable.
Good Night Sweet Wife.
