Australia to get a new PM today: Scott Morrison to run against Peter Dutton for the top job...

Australia is set to get a new Prime Minister after Malcolm Turnbull was deserted by his most loyal lieutenants, who tendered their resignations and urged him to step aside for the good of the country.

Scott Morrison will run in a leadership ballot against Mr Dutton, with Greg Hunt replacing him as treasurer, and a backer of Mr Morrison said the Prime Minister intends to vacate his position to allow a two-way contest.

Mr Morrison has emerged as a potential consensus candidate, a former immigration minister like Mr Dutton who could appeal to both moderate and conservative Liberal MPs alike.

Mr Dutton's supporters believe the Treasurer has been planning his own shot at the leadership since Monday, when he was tipped off about growing support for the former Home Affairs Minister.

Assuming the above is correct - some of it is informed speculation rather than anything being formally announced, conservatives should hope Peter Dutton prevails - but even Scott Morrison is better than Turnbull.

Australian gun laws are actually slowly being rolled back from the late 1990s changes but for the most part, that's a state issue, not a federal one.

Dutton would likely be better on those issues, if they arise federally but that's unlikely.

Turnbull is still fighting. What a time for him to finally develop a backbone. If he’d shown this before he wouldn’t be in this mess.

Their gun laws are an internal issue...just as surely as are ours. Americans are no more qualified to determine their policies than Australians are to determine ours. The only thing we have a legitimate right to hope for is that Australia is a supporter of a number of very long established principles of freedom and strength...principles recently subscribed to by Trump...Reagan...Thatcher...Harper...and Howard (among others).

Time to put Phillip Adams out to pasture. His use of Bruce Shapiro to explain American politics to Australians borders on criminal.

One person who will not miss Turnbull?

Trump.
