Justice Department sides with Asian-Americans suing Harvard over admissions policy

The Justice Department offered a public show of support in court Thursday to a group suing Harvard for what it says is discrimination against Asian-American applicants to the elite university.

A filing in the ongoing Massachusetts case is the Trump administration's most significant entry into the debate over affirmative action and sets up a fight on the diversity policy that could have wide implications for higher education.

"The record evidence demonstrates that Harvard's race-based admissions process significantly disadvantages Asian-American applicants compared to applicants of other racial groups -- including both white applicants and applicants from other racial minority groups," the Justice Department said in court papers Thursday.

"The evidence, moreover, shows that Harvard provides no meaningful criteria to cabin its use of race; uses a vague 'personal rating' that harms Asian-American applicants' chances for admission and may be infected with racial bias; engages in unlawful racial balancing; and has never seriously considered race-neutral alternatives in its more than 45 years of using race to make admissions decisions."

Harvard has rejected the assertion that it sets caps on the number of Asian-American students, and admissions officials say they consider all aspects of applicants' backgrounds and their ability to contribute to the academic setting.

In a statement, Harvard said it was "deeply disappointed" with the Justice Department for siding with the group that is "recycling the same misleading and hollow arguments."

"Harvard does not discriminate against applicants from any group, and will continue to vigorously defend the legal right of every college and university to consider race as one factor among many in college admissions, which the Supreme Court has consistently upheld for more than 40 years," the university said.

The case is set to go to trial in Boston in October.

Harvard does not discriminate against applicants from any group

So they claim they do not discriminate

and will continue to vigorously defend the legal right of every college and university to consider race as one factor among many in college admissions

And then turn around and admit they do just that.

So says tenured and politically connected Deans, profs, admins, et al who wouldn’t DARE give up THEIR JOBS in the name of “diversity”

Or admissions of their “Li’l Darlins” who didn’t quite cut the mustard

Hypocrites beyond description

There is no “compelling” govt issue in discrimination against anyone, and esp whites and Asians who consistently and drastically outperform

And Asians continue to vote Democrat. Throw them in with Jews as “really smart people who do really stupid self destructive things.”

Yes. It's about time to restore meritocracy in society. This is a step in the right direction.

How about Harvard diversifying its faculty and student body as far as politics go? Harvard is a liberal brainwashing machine. Harvard is one of the largest (maybe largest) recipient of Federal tax dollars for research of all kinds

Reverse discrimination is just a bad, if not worse than the regular kind.

This all sounds good but what will the results be?

Whites are already under 50% at harvard.

With this ruling white european stock people will dwindle to 10-25%.

The new masters of america will non white long before the demographics of the country shift against people of people of white european background.

What effect will that have on the interpretation constitution?

The chinese for example will be big winners of this. Chinese spy agencies are very active on american campuses. The chinese model is totally imperial. Xe is moving to God King status. People change once they get into power. That generally means no more mr nice guy.

Harvard has discriminated against qualified students at least since the mid-1980s. It got so bad I wouldn't write recommendations for them anymore. They didn't even have the decency to pick qualified students over seriously flawed ones coming out of the same HS.

The other top-tier schools weren't perfect. But they at least accepted students who reasonably met their stated qualifications.

JMHO

It is big stuff! It has a permanent impact on who are winners and losers.

Would the world have been better off if Obama didn't get his Affirmative Action law degree from Harvard?

It is, not just because it’s wrong and hypocritical, it hurts society overall due to attitudes. perceptions, and non opportunity for the best and the brightest to go and do what they are most qualified to do.

And I haven’t even mentioned the dropout rates and Peter Principle for the “disadvantaged” admitteds

Any honest discussion of Harvard admission policies will get you branded ‘antisemitic’.

Because of serious grade inflation and racism issues, my company doesn’t accept Harvard degrees.

In a law review article I wrote about 20 years ago, I discussed Harvard’s admission policies. See http://allanfavish.com/index.php/affirmative-actionracial-preferences/134-ccri-and-hopwood
