I did a few gigs in Russian Tea Rooms back in the 60’s, and nearly all the Russian and Gypsy songs do that. It is characteristic of that music.

Dmitri's death at such a young age was a terrible blow to the world of lieder. There was no one who could sing the songs of Rachmaninov like he could. I like the way he caressed the C at the end of the song.
