THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HARRY WARREN

CRAZY QUILT: “IN THE MERRY MONTH OF MAYBE”

Billy Rose knew he could rely on Harry for any number of songs for a revue, so in 1931 he tapped him for three. The most famous, a genuine immortal, will be featured next weekend. Billy again tapped Ira Gershwin as the lyricist, and once more Billy inserted his own name into the lineup as a form of extortion.

Although the label said it was recorded by Ralph Bennett, this was actually Fred Rich’s band, featuring the Dorsey brothers and Bunny Berrigan serving their apprenticeships. Note the tuba supporting the bass line. Paul Small handled vocal duties.

Tune in next weekend for more Harry Warren – when he finds his million dollar baby in a five-and-ten-cent store – and the Great American Songbook.
