One possibility of why songs of this era made those dramatic turns into minor keys is the sense that these bands were playing on the deck of the Titanic. The economy hit rock bottom in 1931, then crashed through that bottom and found a whole new bottom. Happy ditties didn’t show up again until FDR took over in 1933.
