I was thinking of Agatha Christie’s disappearance. When I first heard the story, the explanation I heard was that she was trying to frame her husband:

Possibly. Sick all around. i could never live with myself if I killed someone.
Unless I were in the military and had to protect the country. Even then, it would be hard.
We should pray for our troops. They do things that most of us don’t have the stomach for. They deserve our gratitude and the very best of care.
