Trump's latest China tariffs are the right thing to do
Fox News ^ | 9/18/18 | Gordon Chang

The fundamental problem facing the global trading system today is that since the turn of the century China has behaved like an outlaw at the center of world commerce.

China has, through theft and forced taking, grabbed U.S. intellectual property worth hundreds of billions of dollars each year. This has, with justification, been called the biggest theft in history.

Some of the comments at Fox:

We send our proprietary inventions to a communist country to produce and then they make cheap knock offs of these products there and then We Americans buy this cheap toxic crap after they cut corners and give us inferior products from paychecks we earn in America and that benifits whom. WakeTFU Liberals.

Anyone that disagrees with this is a traitor that does not care about this country or it's citizens. Why else would you want China to be the only winner in any trade agreement?

This is long overdue and something that should have been done a long time ago. The U.S. and the world handed themselves to China on a silver platter.

Great article. Hopefully Trump will end ALL trade with China. Our 130 billion in exports to them is chump change compared to our 17 trillion GDP. All the American manufacturers that are there now exporting to the US will have no choice but to relocate their production facility to friendlier Asian countries and to the US. That will be the real nail in the coffin to China’s economy when American corporate investment in China dries up.

Gaining at least a level playing in trade with China is undoubtedly the right thing to do. Yet the PRC, being authoritarian, does not care if their people suffer economically in a trade war. Xi simply can refuse to modify China’s trade policies, knowing Trump will be in office at most another six years, with the likelihood that a new administration will be globalist.

China is not a typical country. It is huge, has its own market, and has a long history of isolation and self-containment.

America’s elites (encouraged by business cronies) 30 years ago thought that “open trade” would integrate China into the world / US dominated order of things. That’s not to say the US hasn’t got some benefits - cheap consumer goods allowed the government to issue massive debt, and our Federal Reserve to print money like crazy without fear of inflation. Once again - America’s elites skim the cream. Of course, it also suppressed wages for America’s middle class as well.

Politically, China has not behaved exactly as our elites planned. China used openness to its advantage and own growth to obtain jobs for its citizens, money for investment, and technology for itself.

If you notice, Schumer, Pelosi and the Democrat Party are not opposing Trump on this. I think the entire US establishment now understands the USA should not be contributing to the power of the Chinese Communist Party or helping raise-up a strategic rival.

It's amazing how little interest there is in this subject on Free Republic. This critical policy affects Americans directly(other than the border).

Free Republic is not what it used to be.
