Why would I joke? America is not just the US. North America, Central America, South America. Ask any Canadian. They are Americans, too.
We think that US citizens are the only Americans, but we don’t own the name.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know we are the only country in the world that has the word "America" in it's official name.
We are The United States of America. I have never Mexicans, Central, South Americans or Canadians EVER refer to themselves as “”Americans’’. And I have a Canadian born daughter in law and have known and worked with dozens of said mentioned peoples south of our border over many years.
