Major Hurricane Michael Live Thread II
NHC/NOAA ^ | 9 October 2018 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 10/09/2018 4:49:06 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Major Hurricane Michael is churning toward the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast. Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Monday for 35 counties with mandatory coastal evacuations in the FL Panhandle. 1,250 National Guard troops are aiding the process and more than 4,000 more placed on standby.

FEMA is already on the ground in Florida; other federal agencies are also preparing to assist people in the storm's path.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday declared a state of emergency for the entire state. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency for 92 counties ahead of Hurricane Michael landfall.

Meanwhile, Tallahassee city government (Andrew Gillum, Mayor & D'Rat FL Gubernatorial candidate) offices are "closed until further notice." Tallahassee International Airport ‏is suspending commercial flight activity as 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday but expects to resume activity on Thursday.

The U.S. military moved its aircraft from the Panhandle on Monday. Roughly 50 F-22 stealth fighter jets — valued around $150 million each — have been relocated from the Tyndall Air Force Base, while the U.S. Navy said it is moving all its training aircraft from Pensacola.

Energy Production The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) on Tuesday estimated that around 726 MMcf/d (28.4%) of natural gas production and 670,831 b/d (39.5%) of oil production in the GOM had been shut in ahead of the storm.

As of midday Tuesday, 75 platforms and three rigs had been evacuated, while eight dynamically positioned rigs had been moved out of the storm’s path as a precaution, according to BSEE.

Hey hey! Thanks! We had heard the heavy equipment was inbound, but not actually on site and working. I can’t believe how well the various agencies choreographed repairs. All this only a week after the storm!

Fantastic news! Returned home tonight from NC, and the hotel I stayed in was full of utility workers. Presume they are still restoring utilities damaged by Hurricane Florence.

More great news. Duke Energy restored power to our neighborhood. With the army of heavy equipment working on the road at Stump Hole we might be able to move directly to our home rather than camp out at friend’s place ten miles away.

I don’t know the name of the agency or company, but gasoline is supposedly available in Port St Joe at 5 gallons per day.

Once we get back, I intend to post photos of our damaged home. I thank God we didn’t suffer flood damage. A couple short sections of soffits are gone, so I suspect some rain found its way inside. Fingers crossed the damage to the interior is minimal.

I gather the drive-bys (correct me if I am wrong) have said very little about storm response and how Governor Scott and President Trump’s agencies have done THE BEST JOB EVER.

Instead of the usual dozen or so of county-wide polling places, there will be only two, and voters can stop by any time to vote early/absentee. I have never missed an election and will not miss this one.

We are in civil war with home-grown barbarians. May God Bless our America.

You are providing a parade of amazing, fabulous news!

So many reasons to be thankful that adults are in charge! We must avoid getting tired of winning, and make sure we keep responsible adults in office during the upcoming elections. Spread the word.

I assume your house isn’t directly on the beach front? With Michael’s storm surge, a house would have to be built almost like a bunker to stand up to it.

The Drive-By’s are going to focus on the WORST damaged areas, and WILL NOT report on areas with little damage. I suppose to them, good news ISN’T news.

We were on the way to Panama City to help some friends clear trees and we saw some depressing damage, but this convoy lifted our spirits! #Publix #HurricaneMichael

Recent-built gulf front homes actually did well. BUT had the eyewall transited just five miles eastward of its track their fate would have been the same as those in Mexico Beach.

We are on St Joe Bay. The dune beneath our home is eight feet above sea level and the first living floor is eight more feet.

Our damage was from wind, and from the preliminary photos shot in haste by a friend, the wind force alone was incredible. I lost a ten foot wide section of screening (facing south) and associated aluminum framing from Opal in 1995. When I rebuilt, I did it extra strong . . . but to no avail. It blew in once again.

This time I’m thinking about making it removable in order to avoid another mess.

On the other hand, I’m very pleased that our 25 year old 2x4 exterior walled home, upgraded with only hurricane clips and storm shutters, did so well.

Civil engineers and statisticians are going to have a lot fun examining the aftermath of Hurricane Michael.

Watching video of PC Beach council meeting earlier today. Looks like they voted to move the curfew to 10 PM, and rescinded the alcohol ban. Pertinent discussion at about 1:49:00.

https://www.facebook.com/CityOfPanamaCityBeach/videos/2135022380084003/

During today’s City Council meeting, the Council changed the curfew for the City Limits of PCB from 10 p.m.-6 a.m. The Council also lifted the alcohol ban within the City Limits. Alcohol can be sold inside the city limits from 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Not all of Panama City Beach, the island, is inside the city limits. See voter ward map below.

For the areas east and west of the City Limits, you are under Bay County jurisdiction. The County has a ban on alcohol sales and the county curfew is 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.

You might be able to get out there soon to access the status.

Where does your water supply come from?
Is that those lengths of blue/green pipe unearthed beside the roadway?

Is your power above ground on poles, or underground?

Yes, we expect to 2-wheel drive out to our home within a few days. Incredible pace of recovery.

Fresh water will be an issue until the state begins permanent road repairs. Only after the DOT informs the local water company what it intends to do can the water co. even think of running fresh water back to the northern end of the peninsula.

We will haul in drinking water and use salt water for flushing and clothes/personal washing. We’ve done this before. Not fun but doable.

Power is on poles. You can see all the new ones in recent photos.

Newer construction is tapped to a sewer line. I assume the sewer lines will be restored at the same time as the water lines. We are on old fashioned septic so it isn’t an issue.

As a sidebar the Sheriff’s deputies apprehended eight looters. Two on Cape San Blas. Four had meth/drug paraphernalia.

So much good news, it makes water challenges a bit more tolerable. Continued thanks for your awe inspiring updates!

Does the current road work include access across the new passes?

Incredible isn’t it? Ten days after the near miss of a Cat 4/5 Hurricane. The dinosaur media just can’t bring themselves to recognize the executive abilities of two first-time politicians . . . President Trump and Governor Scott. These are sorts of men our Framers hoped for.

We’ve had fun the past few days reminding the locals here in Tallahassee-stan of America/Florida’s good fortune to have PDJT and Rick Scott at the helm. Heh, heh.

Well, our boredom ends tomorrow when we head back to the Cape. Since the water lines won’t come online anytime soon, we’ll stay at a friend’s vacant vacation home for a while. We meet up with an insurance adjuster at our home on Tuesday. From photos passed on from friends, I’m amazed how well our 25 year old home apparently held up. The newer building codes double the cost of construction compared to non-coastal areas, but are worth it.

On the downside it will lead to further gentrification of coastal towns as only the well-to-do can afford the extra expense. When property values settle down, we’ll probably sell and move to an interior location. The drama of hurricane season every year just isn’t worth it.

Thank you all for your concern.
