Fresh off Kavanaugh win, Republicans aim to confirm more than 40 judges before midterms

With the Supreme Court nomination of Brett M. Kavanaugh completed, GOP senators are quickly pivoting to filling out the rest of the federal courts, eyeing more than 40 district and circuit judges they want to confirm before the end of the year.

One top priority is filling the seat left vacant on the powerful D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals when Justice Kavanaugh was elevated.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley, Republicans’ point man on the issue, said if the White House can nominate someone this week, lawmakers could have Justice Kavanaugh’s replacement seated by Christmas.

That would be in addition to 38 district judges and three circuit judges already pending on the Senate floor, who Republicans say they should confirm before they leave Washington to campaign for the mid-term elections.

“McConnell ought to keep the Senate in session until we get all 41 of those judges done,” Mr. Grassley told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt Wednesday.

The Judiciary Committee could add nine judges to that list during a meeting Thursday, and five others had their confirmation hearings Wednesday, meaning they, too, could see committee action this month.

District Court judges aren’t that important.
*******************************
They are VERY important. The more District Court judges get in, the less often important cases will end up getting assigned to sitting ACTIVIST judges. Get ALL of Trump’s nominees confirmed ASAP.

“I think a majority can change the rules.”

Yeah, that sounds right. However, except for nuclear optioning Supreme Court picks, McConnell hasn’t shown any interest in changing any other rules.

“More GOP senators means swing senators won’t hold a veto and Democrats can’t block a vote.”

Yes, more good Conservative GOP Senators would effectively neuter both sides.
The Collins, Murkowski, Gardner RINOS, and all of the RATs While it’s hard to get a handle on the numbers in the House, I don’t see any way that the RATs do anything but loose ground in the Senate.

“If we keep the Senate l kinda hope Thomas retires as a precautionary move.”

YES! Not only do we have to replace the RATs in the SCOTUS, but there needs to be an effort to push out the Strict Constructionist seats another 30 years to keep them out of play for the RATs

Here’s the “batting order!”
Ginsberg (85) (1993)
Breyer (80) (1994)
Thomas (70) (1991)
Alito (68) (2006)
Sotomayor (64) (2009)
Roberts (64) (2005)
Trump should try his best to leave only those in their 50’s

And it would be really good to replace Roberts with either Gorsuch or Kavanaugh

No. Recess appointments are only temporary. They are valid until the end of the current term, which means they would all have to step down by the end of this year. Recess appointments are temporary - all of them, whether judicial or executive branch.

Re: “If the GOP expands its Senate majority, judicial nominations should easily sail through. If the Democrats take over, they will sit on them through 2020.”

I hate to spoil your celebration, but have you looked at the Senate vote totals for most of Trump’s judges?

Most of them are already sailing through.

Almost all of the first 17 Appellate judges that Trump nominated were vigorously opposed by the Democrats.

Since May 2018, just three of the nine Trump Appellate nominees have faced serious Democrat opposition.

The District Court nominees are even more shocking.

Only two out of 41 Trump judges were vigorously opposed by the Democrats.

If God forbid we lose the house and some here say that won’t happen and no more then 10 loss’s at most which would be great. I’d like the senate to just confirm judges everyday for two years. What a difference that would make for our country.
