ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. - A Rochester Hills man seen on video firing a gun at a teenager who was lost and looking for directions was found guilty by a jury Friday on two counts.

Jeffrey Zeigler was charged with assault with intent to murder and felony firearms violations. The jury found him guilty of the lesser charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and possession of a firearm in commission of a felony.

The 14-year-old boy said he got lost while walking to school April 12 and was looking for directions. He knocked on the door to a home in the 2200 block of South Christian Hills Drive. The homeowner told police he came out with a shotgun because he believed his home was being broken into.

Deputies responded to the home about 8:20 a.m. that morning after the man's wife said someone was trying to break into her home.

"The caller reported that a black male was trying to break into her house and her husband chased after him into the yard. Upon deputies' arrival, it was determined that the husband chased after the male with a 12 gauge shotgun and fired a round toward the fleeing male. No injuries were reported," reads a statement from the Sheriff's Office.

He was found guilty based on a video that was shot by his own security system.

You could say that he was hoisted with his own petard.

Very bad shoot.

Kid was cleancut.

Guy fired at a fleeing suspect. Generally, if you cannot claim that you are in fear for your life, do not pull the trigger.

The perp claimed that he slipped and that caused him to fire the weapon.

However, his own video clearly shows that there was no slipping involved.

He will have some time in the pen to think about the irony of being convicted by his own video.

I know the article says the kid missed the bus, but how does a 14 year old get lost walking to school? Is he retarded?

The perp claimed that he slipped and that caused him to fire the weapon.

I'm sure he said that in the initial police interview.

NEVER EVER SPEAK TO THE POLICE. Ask for your lawyer instead.

I've had one question since I first read of this story...

How is it this kid got lost on his way to school? Did he not know where the school was? Had he never been there before? Seems very odd.

Yup. Always a no-no.

If you’re too stupid to understand the circumstances under which lethal force is jusfiable, you can get sent to prison for a long time.

And you aren’t allowed to use lethal force against someone who no longer poses a threat.

Like upon a fleeing kid.

Small concern, in comparison to the substantial evidence of a bad shoot.

If the kid had taken the bus a lot, he really may not have known the way there.

By the way, as an interesting aside, note the very purposed and particular words I used: “....if you cannot claim that you are in fear for your life, do not pull the trigger.”

I used those exact words for a reason.

He’s a moron, and should get the book thrown at him... Fools like this are the problem, period.

Obviously the guys not too bright, he tried to claim he fell and the gun went off.... even though he was on his own CAMERA at the time...

Now the odds of any serious damage with birdshot at the range the boy was at by the time he fired was next to nill (and I don’t know what sort of shot the guy had).... buck shot probably wouldn’t have hit the kid at those range due to the spread, but had it it would have done harm...

But either way, throw the book at this idiot. Millions of law abiding sane gun owners get tarred by the actions of fools like this.

That was not a concern for the jury.

Most burglars don’t knock on you door

Based strictly on the video it appears the homeowner was not being threatened.

However, the video appears to be edited. Watch the kid walk up to the door, after about 1 second, the kid is seen almost in reverse, walking backwards then fleeing. It appears to be edited right after he knocks on the door.

And most burglaries occur in the a.m. when most people are at or on their way to work.

The shooter is dumber than the kid that got lost.

Yes they do. It’s quite common for burglars to knock on the door prior to breaking in.

“However, the video appears to be edited.”

If the video is edited, and that fact was not entered into evidence, both the perp and his lawyer are really, really dumb.

“I know the article says the kid missed the bus, but how does a 14 year old get lost walking to school? Is he retarded?”

IIRC, he was new to the neighborhood. Had moved there recently.

I moved from a city in Eastern PA to a small town in NC when I was 12. I didn’t know where anything was for a while.

In fact, an NC State Trooper arrested me not long after I arrived in NC, because he thought I was a runaway.

He asked me where I lived, and I instinctively said the name of my former home in PA. I was hanging around a local truck stop at the time, fascinated by all the big rigs.

When I said I lived in PA, he put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5.
