The Chinese still recall World War II and shake in their sandals. A strong Japan will help keep the Chinese in check.

There’s a proposal for Japan and the US to build updated F-22s using F-35 airframe technology and avionics. I’m not sure where that’s at right now, but it’s a great idea - and the US should buy quite a few of those to augment our insufficient F-22 force.
