THE CALL BY THE GREATEST BROADCASTER EVER
RECENT CONVERSATION BETWEEN GIBBY AND ECKERSLY
CRAZY ENDINGS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj-C5BnwwDI
Here’s my favorite part about watching the video of Gibson’s Home Run:
Dodger fans are notoriously famous for leaving games early (getting out of that parking lot is brutal). If you look behind the right field pavilion, just as Vin Scully makes the call, you’ll see the brake lights of a car that is leaving the game. He must have left after the 8th inning assuming Eck was going to do what he had done all season and shut the Dodgers down.
I can imagine what is going on inside that car. “Holy ####, we missed it - one of the greatest moments in baseball history!”
And just think if you were one of the people who left early when the Dodgers hit four straight home runs in bottom of the 9th and won it with a home run in the 10th. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj-C5BnwwDI
the dodgers invariably lead all of MLB in attendance every year by the size of a mid-sized city. every other team would trade markets/fan bases in a skinny minute, and everyone knows it.
taillights, visiting broadcasters, and urban myths notwithstanding
Rick Mondays play to save the flag was the only one better
I’m not a Dodgers fan but I am a baseball fan and know quite a lot about the game. But, I don’t understand why the Kirk Gibson HR is such a huge deal...even after all these years.

Well, that As team was thought to be virtually invincible - and Gibsons homer at that moment changed the whole character of the Series. Its still my second-worst baseball moment as a fan - the worst being Scott Spezios home run for the Angels against the Giants in game 6 of the 2002 series that did the same (damned) thing. :)
You are very correct about the A’s being thought to be invincible.
The early story line in the game was Jose Canseco, who for all of his many career home runs, had never hit a grand slam. His GS earlier was how the A’s got their 4 runs. I seemed to reinforce everyone’s belief that the Dodgers had no chance in the Series.
Then there was Gibson. Not in the starting lineup, in fact in the locker room watching the game on TV. The Dodgers were without their heart and soul player.
But, when the game got close, Gibson came out and told Lasorda he thought he could pinch hit if needed.
Then there was Eckersly who had been absolutely lights out all season.
But, Lasorda rolled the dice, and the rest is history!!
Oh, those brake lights :o)
I bet it was Brian Williams...
Now it makes sense. Thanks.
They will still lie and claim they saw it. Kind of like 5 million claiming they were at Woodstock. Of a senator claiming he was in DaNang.
Bad ankle on one side and bad leg on the other side. He could barely walk so he could not put much power into the swing. And Eckersly was the best at that time.
What a moment that was!! And it crushed the As for the rest of the series.
Oral Hershiser, btw, won the Series MVP — and deserved it.
How about this moment in the next year’s Series, back in SF (earthquake):
