Trump administration plans to require drug companies to include prices in ads
The Hill ^ | 10/15/18 | JESSIE HELLMANN

Drug companies would be required to include list prices in advertisements under a Trump administration proposal released Monday.

The proposed rule, announced by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar Monday, is the next step in the administration’s efforts to bring down drug prices.

"Patients deserve to know what a given drug will cost when they're being told about the benefits and risks it may have," Azar said during a speech Monday in Washington D.C.

"And they deserve to know when a drug company has pushed its prices to abusive levels, and they deserve to know this every time they see a drug advertised to them on TV."

The pharmaceutical industry opposes the proposal, arguing it would confuse consumers because a drug’s list price is often lower than what the patient will actually pay.

PhRMA, the deep-pocketed trade group representing pharmaceutical companies in the U.S., tried getting ahead of Azar’s announcement, telling reporters Monday morning that its members would begin directing patients to more information about drug costs in television ads.

Every ad mentioning a prescription drug by name will include a voiceover or text telling patients to go to a company-sponsored website where they can find information about the list price, as well as a range of potential out-of-pocket costs and potential patient assistance.

“We want patients to have more cost information and support using direct-to-consumer advertising,” said PhRMA President Steven Ubl, but “just including list prices is not sufficient and would be misleading.”

Azar noted PhRMA's plan in his speech Monday afternoon, but said it doesn't go far enough.

"It is no coincidence that the industry announced a new initiative today that will help make price and cost information more accessible," Azar said.

"We appreciate their effort. The placing information on a website is not the same as putting it in an ad."

An acquaintance of mine is in the last rounds of cancer suffering.

Sadly it’s a matter of time but she keeps going to lose.

The drugs and chemo were many thousands a month.

Now she is making the most of whatever time is left. The endgame is to travel however much as possible.

“Doctors office should have prices of all ICD codes. So you know if your nipple was bitten off by a beaver, the cost of that ICD code is 50 bucks”

Is there actually a code for this...?

There was an article in Imprimas that advocated making hospitals publish prices as a way to bring market forces to bear on the cost of medical care. I think this sort of thing is reasonable.

They should not only force pharma companies to list their price in the United States but in other countries as well, just so we know how bad they are shafting us.

“while you are at it, post wholesale auto prices to car dealers”

Yes, that would certainly help for those times when you are brought unconscious to a used car dealer and have to accept the first car they show you at whatever price they want to charge.

The price of the drug should be given to the consumer by the doctor....referring to the local stores that sell it. That's where the list price should come from.

Why go to Rite Aid when it's $3.00 less at Walmart.

Info for the consumer is a no brainer, especially the price. When Bill Clinton was in the WH he tried to persuade Congress to end the mandate of allowing the consumer to see what country a product was produced/grown in. The Congress was too afraid so Clinton failed but the democrats still want us to believe they really care about us lowly American consumers.

Nah.. but there is W56.22 Struck by Orca, initial counter. It looks like the W56 Series references marine life. So if you just happen to get mauled by a bunch of marine life, it is W56.32.

The W61 series of ICD codes is for bitten or pecked by exotic birds.

V91.07 is something you need to be concerned with. Get burnt because your water skis are on fire.

V94.810 is coded if your Kayak or any civilian watercraft runs into the USS Ronald Reagan or similar military watercraft.

You can also be pecked by a chicken, bitten by a cow and god knows what else.

How about requiring drug companies ads on TV and radio to slow down their disclaimer lists of side effects up and including DEATH? They go by so fast you don’t hear them at all. And, require them to report what country manufactures the drug like China, India, Pakistan, Costa Rica, et al.? Then tell us how many inspectors they have, e.g., 5,000 labs in India with 27 FDA inspectors? Wanna bet few, if any, are inspected?

Valsartan anyone? As in Valsartan found to probably contain “cancer causing” ingredients and pulled off the US market?

http://fortune.com/2018/07/16/recall-fda-valsartan-blood-pressure-medication/

https://www.consumerlab.com/answers/how-can-i-find-out-where-a-vitamin-or-supplement-is-made-and-where-its-ingredients-come-from/where_supplements_come_from/

“...Most dietary supplements sold in the U.S. are manufactured here but their key ingredients generally come from other countries. There is no requirement for labels on supplements to indicate the country of origin of ingredients. What the FDA does require is that labels provide a phone number or address to contact the manufacturer or distributor, but this is not necessarily where the product is made. If a product is manufactured outside the U.S., the name of that country must be indicated on the label.

You can try to ask a manufacturer or distributor for the “country of origin” of ingredients in its product, but it may not be provided. Be aware that manufacturers may change the source of an ingredient over time. Even if you learn that an ingredient is from China — as many are – ingredient suppliers typically sell more than one version of an ingredient, each differing in quality and cost. It is up to the company making the final product to decide what grade of ingredient to purchase and use.

For us at ConsumerLab.com, the most important question is not where a product or its ingredients originate, but “what’s really in that product?” That is, does the supplement contain the listed ingredient at the claimed amount, without contamination (from lead and other heavy metals, etc.), in an unspoiled condition, and will tablets/caplets properly break apart to release the ingredients? These are issues which affect supplement quality, regardless of the country of origin. (You can read how we test each type of product at How Products Were Evaluated.) We also check that product labeling is clear, and we identify toxicity risks with ingredients in the amounts provided.

So, although it may not be possible to find out the geographic origin of the ingredients in a supplement, you can use our information to find out if a product provides what it claims and what you want...”

This is the tip of the iceberg, IMO. To sum up, Buyer Beware!

It is an outstanding plan! Get on with it. Next require the same of all medicine! The only industry where you are treated like some kind of fool if you ask how much it costs.

“How can they include the price when they don’t know what it will be?”

Patients are billed. They know exactly what every medical procedure and pill costs.

They don’t know in advance of their decisions. They only know after the fact, from their bills. as you noted.

Drug companies in America charge 10-100 times what they charge other nations.

I am intimately familiar with wholesale drug costs and we Americans get raped.

It would probably be classified as being bitten by “other” hoofstock. It’s a W55 code. Or there is one for being bitten by other mammals.

Funny thing is, It is broken down into, initial contact, subsequent contact(I could only venture that once you were bitten, the mammal came back for more) and sequela(you got an infection from said mammal bite)
