State Tells Christian Filmmakers: Make Same-Sex Marriage Films or Spend 90 Days in Jail

Two Christian filmmakers appeared before the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Paul Tuesday to challenge Minnesota state law which they say illegally forces them to produce and create films expressing messages that contradict their core beliefs.

Telescope Media Group owners Carl and Angel Larsen have already been threatened with hefty fines and up to 90 days in jail if they choose to disregard the law.

The Larsens want to enter the wedding industry. However, the state's Human Rights Act stipulates if the couple creates films celebrating their Christian beliefs about marriage – that marriage is between one man and one woman, they must also create films about marriage that violate their beliefs, including films promoting same-sex marriages.

In 2017, the Larsens tried to challenge the law as unconstitutional but a lower court dismissed their case and mandated that they service same-sex weddings or close this part of their business. They are now appealing to the 8th Circuit Court.

“the SCOTUS decision was based on the biased rights commission”

I see. Though I think there would still be some precedence set re:government agencies issuing like demands.

The state of Massachusetts would cut off the head of John the Baptist and crucify Jesus Christ. Too late, but they can still support perversity and kill babies. There is a Supreme Judge. Repent!

Are we saying that if I make a movie in Minnesota involving a heterosexual marriage, I have to also make a movie involving a homo marriage? That can’t be true.

Minnesota, populated by a lot of Swedes.

Not many Swedes, though quite a few people of various Scandinavian descent. But like most places, there’s been an influx of people from various places over the years.
Minnesota has the most Somalis outside of Somalia itself. And there’s a large amount of illegals from south of the border. Not to mention cruddy citizens from other states who have be-spoiled the place.

Only if you are a business makes videos, and someone comes along and wants a gay video, you have to. That’s what they’re saying.

So Michael Moore has to make a pro-traditional Christian movie then?

Where does art end and commerce begin?

and why do lawyers get to discriminate against clients?

the colorado decision was bullstalin to begin with. the state itself did not recognize same sex marriages when they tried to force the baker to recognize a same sex marriage.

Under the First Amendment, you may no more compel speech than prohibit it.

In this lawless age, couldn’t the US Marshals arrest the state judge, ( or federal judge for that matter,) for a civil rights violation?

This seems an even greater First Amendment breach than the bakery cases. How can the government dictate creation of artworks against one’s own beliefs?

If they don’t want to make wedding pictures for same sex couples, their only recourse is shut down their business.

A business that serves the public has to abide by non-discrimination principles. Its the law.

We don’t get to choose what laws we will obey.

Under the First Amendment, you may no more compel speech than prohibit it.

In the 70's SCOTUS took up just such a case.A guy in New Hampshire was imprisoned for deliberately obscuring the words "Live Free Or Die" which have been featured on the state's license plates for decades. He was some kind of Marxist pacifist.

SCOTUS ruled in his favor stating that the 1st Amendment also allows you to remain silent and thus the state's requirement that those words remain visible was a violation of his 1st Amendment rights.

This is a good thing because I've deliberated obscured the words "The Spirit Of America" which appear on my state's plates (my state absolutely *not* being as claimed on the plates).

Seem this case has at least some on the left quite worried:

Not the issue if you run a business.

If you serve the public, you must serve everyone with certain exceptions.

And they don’t claim to serve private clients.
