In recent years, they have branched out to autosomal DNA, but they are best known for Y-DNA testing and they have the most active family DNA groups that, since they use Y-DNA analysis, are surname based. Not everyone who shares Y-DNA also share the surname for several reasons including the obvious fact that your father may not be the man listed on your birth certificate. But, more likely, Y-DNA lines extend beyond the use of surnames, at least in Europe.
I’m sure that Warren got expert help and advice, and I suspect that she was told about the weaknesses in her test, but she decided to run with it anyway thinking that the press wouldn’t know and wouldn’t care that her assertion was bogus.
