My first guess is that it’s most likely one of their own hoping to make it look like it’s the other side. After all they were receiving lots of negative press and now they will be hoping for the sympathy vote.

In this case, the political capital.
The Midterms are turning out very well for Republicans in Absentee and Early voting.
If you are a Republican, you would not do anything to disrupt that.
