What kind of malfunction causes a water heater to make noises that sound like gunshots? Is it about to explode?

Water hammer caused by collapsing steam bubbles can sound like a gunshot or shots. You must be young, I grew up when the heat was steam and radiators always banged when the heat came on.

Exploding air bubbles!! No injuries reported.
