'So many bears:' Draft plan says Nunavut polar bear numbers unsafe (for humans)
CTV News ^ | 11/12/18 | Bob Weber

There are too many polar bears in parts of Nunavut and climate change hasn't yet affected any of them, says a draft management plan from the territorial government that contradicts much of conventional scientific thinking.

The proposed plan -- which is to go to public hearings in Iqaluit on Tuesday -- says that growing bear numbers are increasingly jeopardizing public safety and it's time Inuit knowledge drove management policy.

"Inuit believe there are now so many bears that public safety has become a major concern," says the document, the result of four years of study and public consultation. "Public safety concerns, combined with the effects of polar bears on other species, suggest that in many Nunavut communities, the polar bear may have exceeded the co-existence threshold."

Polar bears killed two Inuit last summer.

The plan leans heavily on Inuit knowledge, which yields population estimates higher than those suggested by western science for almost all of the 13 included bear populations.

Scientists say only one population of bears is growing; Inuit say there are nine. Environment Canada says four populations are shrinking; Inuit say none are.

The left just lies on every subject, this is why people turn off major media. It is all lies.

Global Warming was supposed to be destroying the polar bear population. Not even close.

Climate Change propaganda!

It's the same as migrant policies in Europe. The elites who drive policy don't have to live with the consequences on their policies.

Polar bears do not have a predator. They fear no living thing. And every other living thing is a potential meal. Apparently they will pass on whales and some walruses that are too large to eat, unless they are starving.

I’ve also heard that they don’t like humans because of the fabric wrapper they have to peel off before consumption. On the flip side, Polar bears appreciate humans because they often bring their own spices and seasoning for the meal (pepper spray). So it is not a surprise that, when extra hungry, humans make decent meals for them.

Maybe too large to 'kill', certainly not eat.

Great post.

Bet it was not covered in the NYTs.

The 30-06 is an excellent round.

Jack O'Conner recommended it for the large bears.

Polar bears killed two Inuit last summer.

Obviously those Inuit were encroaching on the bears' habitat.

The bears are adapting to some recent losses of sea ice by spending more time on land. They have always had a range of activity that includes both surfaces. This may partially explain disagreements about numbers, clearly if more of the bears spend more time on land, the interactions with humans will increase. That is not a categorical proof that there are more bears. But whatever, the narrative has proven faulty and it’s time to get observations to fit theory, or go back to real science and make the theory fit observations (this may not suit climate science very well).

maybe they should just install a great big ol’ coal-fired power plant in the are and see if they can gen up a bit of local “global warming” to polish off those pesky polar bears ...

“someone who has lived and worked there all their lives would know more about Polar Bears”

Innuit culture keeps a very close eye on polar bears. Although they have a generic word for “polar bear” (nanuq, Anglicized as nanook), their custom is to give individual names to each bear in their area. They follow their movements closely, and everyone reports to each other anything they notice about the bears. They always have to be alert against attacks, and have traditional wisdom about when they need to go hunt a bear that is getting too close.

You absolutely cannot live with polar bears close by, like you can with black bears - or even like lions in Africa. Polar bears will pretty reliably hunt any human they catch scent or sight of. They are the single most dangerous predator to humans on Earth.
