The New Jersey couple who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in a viral charity campaign for a homeless man were allegedly working with the vagrant as part of an elaborate ruse, according to a new report.

Prosecutors believe that Mark D’Amico and Kate McClure conspired with homeless man Johnny Bobbitt to create their get-rich-quick scheme in 2017, NBC’s Philadelphia affiliate reported Wednesday.

The couple turned themselves in to authorities on Wednesday, but Bobbitt was still at large, the news station said.

According a source who spoke to the news outlet, which said it had a copy of a criminal complaint, all three are expected to face charges of conspiracy and theft by deception for working together to create the ruse. The Burlington County Prosecutor’s office is expected to make an announcement in the case Thursday, according to multiple reports.

Hey! This is how the dim bulb Cortez can get her rent money. She doesn’t have much to do for the next month or so; she can hang out on a street corner with a cardboard sign saying “Will Shut Up For Rent Money”.

Sad really dad. The account got larger than they thought and greed set in. If they had split it 3 ways Bobbit would not have sued and we would have never known.

In Virginia there is no such thing as a bar. Anyplace that serves alcohol must serve food (and a certain amount, in comparison to their alcohol sales.)
When I was in college they would give away food in order to draw the happy hour crowd in for drinks. Win, win! You could order a beer and feast on nachos or wings.

That’s why I frequently refer to it as GoFraudMe here.

I’ve thought about posting a GoFraudMe telling folks I need money (not why or what) and see how many are stupid enough to contribute. Maybe a picture of a sad looking dog or cat.

Most people don’t know this but homeless people receive food stamps. I worked for our welfare department in food stamps many years ago. Before the first of the month we sent thousands of ATP’s, authorization to purchase, to one local Post Office. That post office was used as their address because you need an address to receive food stamps. They would go to the post office on the first and pick up their ATP.
Since they use a sort of debit card now and just reload them every month it would be even easier for them to receive their food stamps. All perfectly legal.
That’s why they want money and not food.

We had a little thrift store and helped the homeless all the time.Word spread and people would just show up.We would give them clean clothes, shoes, cell phones, stuff to repair their bikes and raincoats, blankets. We had a pantry and people would bring in fresh baked goods, can goods, anything that did not have to be refrigerated. One man came in from Virginia,he lost his job and his wife and child went to live with her Mom.Someone gave him my name.We were able to get him housing that day and a job in 2 days. His wife was able to join him in a few months.Hard to watch a grown man cry in front of you but God was with him.

I guess you never went to College...

Oh, I went to college, but drinking was never important to me. I did all my drinking in high school, decided it was stupid and stopped as an adult. Other than an occasional beer, i don't drink alcohol. Same with my adult kids, they focused on studies and don't drink. Younger daughter complained about party girls in her shared dorm (6 in one apartment) and moved to another dorm with another gal who didn't drink. Food is more important than alcohol.
