One of the many things my ex hid was his propensity toward evil.
I had a struggling daughter who was a reader and very much into LOTR and was trying to stay in the light and he gave her the Pullman Dark Materials series, which was about the last thing she needed. When we discussed it and he agreed not to give it to her, he then would sneak the series to her. She started cutting shortly after that. One small example of someone with a shiny facade who deteriorated.
