How a Blue Wave Wiped Out Republicans in the Largest County in Texas
Wall Street Journal ^ | November 20, 2018 | Dan Frosch

HOUSTON—An energized Democratic electorate wasn’t enough to defeat Texas Sen. Ted Cruz this month, but in the state’s most populous county, it created a blue landslide.

Nearly every Republican in Harris County, home to Houston, was unseated on Nov. 6, including 59 judges and the top executive, Ed Emmett, a moderate who won in 2014 with 83% of the vote.

Mr. Emmett, whose official title is county judge and who was widely lauded for steering the county through the devastation of Hurricane Harvey last year, lost to political novice Lina Hidalgo, a Democrat who said she has never previously attended a meeting of the Harris County Commissioners Court, which she will soon oversee. The 27-year-old won by less than 2% and will now help run a metro area that encompasses some 4.6 million people, the third most populous county in the U.S.

The Harris County election drew national attention in part because 17 African-American women, all Democrats, won judgeships, a symbolic shift for one of the nation’s most diverse cities. But it also demonstrates the growing political divide between more liberal cities and conservative rural areas that is evident even in red states like Texas, where every elected statewide official is a Republican.

Political analysts say some votes for Ms. Hidalgo likely came not from people who specifically preferred her over Mr. Emmett, but rather Democrats who turned out to vote for Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke and used a “straight-ticket” option to select Democrats in every race with the click of a single button. Mr. O’Rourke lost to Mr. Cruz statewide by a margin of 50.9% to 48.3%, but won Harris County with nearly 58% of votes cast.

“Ed Emmett’s loss 100% has to do with straight-ticket voting

Democrats winning makes no sense in a sane country. Suspicious.

Thank George W Bush for relocating the 9th Ward of New Orleans to Houston after Katrina

In before “Cruz’s fault”.

Even Governor Greg Abbott lost Houston (and San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, and El Paso). He won the state by 1,000,000 votes.

And 50% of Texans still do not vote.

“Energized democrats” my ass. This was a brown wave of freeloading, lawbreaking piglets from south of the border. Portraying it as anything else is fraud.

there is scant local media for Republicans/conservatives in Harris County.

Even if you turn to talk radio (on AM), most of the shows have syndicated hosts (even if the programs originate in Houston) and there is little coverage or discussion of the corruption and scandal in (Democrat) city government or any local issues.

You think Dems are sane? Think deeply on that.

It was Democrat Bill White, mayor of Houston and former Clintonista, who invited the Katrina evacuees to stay in Houston and kicked out convention business daring the renters to take him to court.

Bill White also naysayed the rise in violent crime in Houston that was happening on his watch long before Katrina and even attacked his critics for blaming some of it on the evacuees. Mr. White then changed his tune and sought federal funds for our local police by blaming it on Katrina related crime.

Correct. Not a surprise in the least.

In 2018 Houston is nothing but Detroit with 101% relative humidity.

What really did this was straight ticket voting. This was the last time it was used. When voting, you could just pick - straight republican or straight dumocrat...

There have been past episodes of ballot shenanigans in Houston from the wards of Sheila Jackson Lee and Eddie Bernice Johnson. I’m guessing there were just more of it this time, partly from Beto supporters and partly from illegals.

there is little coverage or discussion of the corruption and scandal in (Democrat) city government or any local

That is one of the under-appreciated downsides of the collapse of dinosaur media. As radio stations slash budgets and go all-syndicated, and local newspapers pull the plug, there is nobody watching your local council or county government or school board, all of which have the power to raise your taxes and engage in corruption.

As the late George Carlin rightly observed, these are the people whose deepest, darkest secret prevents them from seeking higher office.

Democrats spent 10s of millions of dollars in Texas this year. Why won’t Republicans do the same in California?

History tells us the winning party loses seats in mid term elections...it also tells us a lot of those seats will be won back!!!

And don’t forget the trash that moved to Houston from NOLA after the hurricane and decided not to go home.
