When someone says squirrels you'd think of those small size rodent-like creatures with their bushy tails. Jumping and running across from trees to trees, squirrels make for cute creatures hunting for their nuts more often. But residents in North Carolina can spot some oddity in and around Robeson County. We vacation in southern North Carolina. When we golf, those little bandits are everywhere. They are not shy about raiding a golf cart.
I’ve always admired a good tail!

Agree. Too much photoshopping going on to give this much credibility. However, having done a lot of squirrel hunting when I was a kid I can confirm that the fos squirrel is much larger than the grey squirrel.
Pine needles vary in size.
Put a ruler next to the needles and take a picture of it, and we would be getting somewhere.

They were hunted intensively by the pioneers. I always thought it amazing they considered a squirrel worth the powder and shot, but squirrel rifles used very little.

Their habitat is longleaf pine forest, the needles of which are well over a foot long. This species of squirrel does grow to be quite large, look around on YouTube for footage from golf courses along the southeastern coast from NC down to FL, you’ll see plenty of them. They’re as large as a house cat. Not as timid as a grey squirrel either.
I see them that large in north Texas - though the color is more uniformly reddish, like this one’s hind foot. Definitely large enough to be .22WMR worthy.

I see you’re in Arizona. That kind of ground cover is pretty ubiquitous in the Southeast. Those pine needles are nominally 8 to 10 inches in length.
They may appear that large, but they are not.
House cats vary from 5-20 lbs. These Fox squirrels seldom get over 2 lbs.
They are much more slender than a house cat, and their tails are much fluffier. That makes them look bigger. Many as as long as smaller house cats, though.
