Homelessness up in NM (Dems planning to spend more money on problem)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | December 18, 2018 | Susan Montoya Bryan/ AP

New Mexico has had an uptick in homelessness, and it’s at the top nationally when it comes to the percentage of people experiencing chronic homelessness.

In New Mexico, about 12 of every 10,000 people were experiencing homelessness, an increase of 2.8 percent from 2017. About 42 percent of them had been continuously homeless for a year or more.

Only the District of Columbia had as high of a percentage of chronically homeless people. The problem has long vexed the state’s largest metro area, Albuquerque, as well as other communities around New Mexico.

Albuquerque’s mayor has highlighted homelessness as one of the city’s legislative priorities for the upcoming session, and commissioners in the most populous county are considering approval of a program aimed at getting more people into housing that comes with support services.

Giving the homeless more "freebies" at taxpayer expense won't solve the problem. But, making shelter contingent on both finding work and counseling could help. However, helping those with severe mental illness, as many have, will pose a much greater challenge.

Hey, New Mexico should legalize Marijuana in addition to all the “housing” help. That should work to eliminate homelessness just like it did with California and Colorado when they took those steps. /sarc

I think at some point they need to see if these “homeless” individuals have any family and get them to step up to the plate to take care of their “loved ones”, both financially and spring for any mental health counseling needed.

I lived in North Dakota from 1964-1988 with just a few years off for college and such. What little homeless problem we had always seemed to vanish near the end of October and reappear about the beginning of May.

Why do you suppose that was?

Gee. Maybe if we stopped importing homeless people from Mexico and Central America - homeless rates would go down.

The same in Portland, ME. I lived there from 84-88 and remember the streets full of homeless in July. All gone by September.

Great, as if Albuquerque doesn’t have enough BUMS. I fully expect to see more of them shuffling around begging, and stinking. If you feed the pigeons, all you get is more pigeons, and covered in pigeon poo.

Listening to John and Ken on KFI in Los Angeles last week, they said Mayor of L.A. Garcetti won’t refer to them as “homeless.” No, he refers to them as people experiencing homelessness.

John simply refers to them as “vagrants.” John is hilarious. They had one caller leave a message on Friday afternoon saying that if they stopped feeding the homeless, they would stop pooping. So funny....that show.

Cut the freebies and they’ll go elsewhere. And NM drops to the bottom of the rankings.

Yeah. Homelessness is up. So is panhandling, big time.

I've lived here (Albuquerque metro area) nearly 14 years, and I've never seen so many mooches on street corners as I have this last year. More and more moochers occupying more and more street corners.
