Proposition 13 is no longer off-limits in California
The San Francisco Cornholicle ^ | December 26, 2018 | Joe Garofoli

Proposition 13 is untouchable.

That’s been the thinking for 40 years in California. Politicians have feared for their careers if they dared suggest changes to the measure that capped property taxes, took a scythe to government spending and spawned antitax initiatives across the country.

However, that is beginning to change. With Republican influence in California on the wane and ascendant Democrats making tax fairness an issue, advocates are confident that the time is right to take a run at some legacies of the 1978 measure.

“See a good tax LAWYER, there’s more than one way to skin a Bear wearing a Red Star.”

There is no way around CA income taxation unless you cease to be a full-time resident. We have thought about buying a place say in Reno and “establishing residency,” (Nevada has no state income tax, but they too tax capital gains). But if we continue to live even part time in CA we will have to pay CA taxes. We are going to avoid all the Capital Gains taxes on our sale by reinvesting in another like kind of property (probably outside CA). But at the end of the day, when we sell out, CA will still get its capital gains money (which today would be $103,000.) on the gain on the CA property unless we keep the new property until we die. In which case, all the capital gains are erased to our heirs. Fine thing, you have to die to avoid being taxed.

“With Republican influence in California on the wane”

Talk about an understatement.

The flood of taxpayers leaving California will become a tsunami.

“Old Virginny should be far enough East to avoid the plague.”

We’ve ALREADY suffered our SECOND invasion from the north.
Now you want to have us invaded from the west as well?!

You’re sure right about that!

I’ve lived in Oregon for 35 years and it used to be a relatively conservative state with strong gun rights and bi-partisan government.

Now, it’s run by a creepy communist who wants to out-do California and governed by supermajorities of Dems in both chambers, so they can do whatever the hell they want with us as far as tax hikes or gun bans.

I wish I could move back to Idaho but all my family are here as well as my business.

I hope they quadruple the tax. Give the voters what they want.

Yep. Since the Communists have figured out that to keep and consolidate power, all they needed to do was to take the control of the VOTE and then DISENFRANCHISE all of the LEGAL and LEGITIMATE Citizens in that once great state, they would be free and clear to establish their own little DICTATORSHIP. Next step is to spread their virulent disease into the United States Senate and House of Representatives and then ultimately on to other states.

Our Founding Fathers must be so very proud of what the current Congressional “Leadership” is allowing to transpire.

The main reason people have remained in California and growth has occurred in single family homes for the past 40 years is due to Prop 13.

So it will be the imported impoverished from 3rd world sh*tholes against the old white homeowners in the once Golden State, with the media propagandizing for fairness for the plight of those poor people who are unable to afford housing of their own.

Visited some ex Oregon friends in Idaho a couple months back. They are being over run by Californians. House prices are shooting up. Every third mansion on Lac Coeur d’Alene is for sale.

Actually, what they've been talking about as a first step, to find a way to sever commercial property out of Prop 13.

Incremental expansion is a tried and true strategy for the Leftists. It works almost every time. They will come after the homeowners once they have taken the commercial property owners to the cleaners.

Governments never can have enough money to stop taking more at every chance. Of course "Government" is a machine made of people, and it can bring out the worst in people.

It sounds like your daughter is in a dangerous position regarding her landlord. With that kind of discrepancy between actual and potential rental income, there is way too much incentive to use extra-judicial measures to forcibly change tenants.

Rule-of-Law is steadily degrading to Pretense-of-Law. The only practical defense for most people is to not be in the area when things cross a red line.

Make sure you tell others that we have high humidity here in Georgia in summer and big bugs, also we are a hidden carry state so everyone is packing.

Yup. You got it.

All the idiots paying cheap labor rates for construction “workers” who only speak Spanish will find out on the back end of the deal that Los Illegales will want their money one way or another.

And the “Americans” who now populate the California legislature will be more then happy to go on the confiscation run to get it for them...as long as they get a cut.

Heh ... on a road heading out of California stage a collection of signs giving a discussion / argument over where Californians fleeing high tax should not go withtheir progressivism. Also counter arguments. Could take a dozen miles Burma Shave style to play out.

John and Ken are going to be all over this. My favorite radio hosts. They make a liking mocking the idiots who have run California into the ground. I wish I lived next to John Kobalt. One funny guy who hates California Politicians. Especially the Garcettis, Cedillos, De Leones, Sanchez, Kamala, etc.
