If a rescue or shelter pet were what folks wanted, wouldn’t they know to go there to get them?

People will simply buy their purebred from a private breeder or out of state breeder.

Prices like that are due to the mass sterilization of the dogs. The prices will continue to rise and dog populations will continue to fall. Puppy mills will continue to produce because of the prices.

You never see free puppy signs anymore.

California is kn the path to replace all pure bred dogs with pitbull mixes, the predominant dog that you find in shelters.

Land in California.

I am sticking to my well bred, multi-generation health tested, pure bred dogs. I know what they will look like as adults, coat, size, predictive behavior, predictive health and longevity, etc.

Rescue greyhounds give someone all of that. They make terrific pets. With the Florida tracks getting ready to close, there will be quite a few up for adoption.

They effectively already have. With few exceptions, the only dogs they have are pit bull mixes stolen from Southerners during whatever the last natural disaster was.

What Im doing for work now means I wind up visiting shelters and "pet stores" on a regular basis. Same thing everywhere, 30 pit bull variants and 1 angry overweight untrained 14 year old chihuahua.

There are people literally waiting around for anything else to be made available and that dog has many offers of homes to adopt it. Even ones that don't belong in the home they are being sent to. One day during a single visit to the pound I saw 2 dogs, both dogs known to have a history of aggression toward children, one of which also had bit adults, adopted by families with children. One of those newly adopted dogs was already aggressive toward the child before the family had left. These same clowns running the place wont adopt out to rural families because by their checklist, rural settings are abusive settings for dogs.

We've been looking for a dog for over a year since my Newf died. Cant find anything. Im really not surprised.

People fall for this bull about puppy mills. The fact is that much like the famous misrepresentation of an "abused" horse, the pictures used have been primarily from foreign nations and the "facts" even in those situations are over a decade old. These people supporting this type of nonsense shouldn't be embarrassed, they should be enraged they have been played the fool by leftist propaganda (again).

These laws are unconstitutional. They are an attack on your security.

Bukhari Vol. 1, #490 "Prayer is annulled by a dog, a donkey and a woman (if they pass in front of the praying people)."

For these types, socially transforming the dog loving American society to one more acceptable to mudslimes is just icing on the cake.

Yeah. They have pushed spay and neutering for so long, that you’ll only be able to have a pet with lots of money. $10,000 for a dog. Sheesh.

Here in PA, Lancaster County is full of puppy mills, cat mills, cow mills etc. Somehow, there is so much money in it, that the state legislature is powerless to do anything except worthless/teethless “laws” to stop it. The Amish run them and flood the state with sad, short-lived, defective animals that the public keeps buying at cheap rates. Follow the money.

Yes. Apparently there is nothing in the ‘new’ law to prevent this. Local pet shops, I assume, will feel the squeeze first or jack-up prices.

If you are opposed to puppy mills, why the objection? Libertarian as I am, I think it’s a Tragedy of the Commons thing. That being said, the effects of the law won’t be very good. Ninety percent of the dogs in shelters are pit bulls and pit bull mixes. I’ve seen for myself. This law results in an increase of pit bull types in homes. Bad idea.

Because I don't believe the government should impose such restrictions on businesses. There's enough public pressure on pet stores to force them to regulate their sources of supply - we see something similar in the fast food industry, where the might of McDonald's forces more humane practices on their beef and poultry suppliers.

When I was a kid puppy mills where what you got when your neighbors dog got out. Generally, those puppies were healthy, well socialized, good dogs and free. It was common knowledge that a pet store was a bad place to get a puppy.

I had three miniature Dachshunds of varying coat types.
The last one had the seizures related to inbreeding.
Now I have a rescue more-or-less terrier. Loved them all.

The thing is, this California law does not just prohibit pet stores from buying from irresponsible breeders running puppy mills. It mandates that pet stores must get all of their animals from rescue shelters. This means that any responsible breeders that have supplied pet stores in California are now out of business.

Like I said, gross government over-reach. Public pressure on pet stores to mandate conditions for their suppliers would have worked just fine.
