This a media story based on an anonymous source so take it with a grain of salt.

But the more I find out about Mattis, the worse he seems.

Mattis was in favor of the terrible, treasonous Iran deal and fought to keep it when Trump ended it.

Mattis supported a failed policy in Afghanistan and rules of engagement that assured U.S. troops were vulnerable and often killed and wounded.

Mattis supported the Paris Climate Accords that would have been a disaster for the U.S.

Trump was right to fire Mattis.

... and yet Trump kept Mattis in an important cabinet post for two years.

You actually forgot the now-printed story about how Mattis was a Clinton tool right from the start and was supposed to be her SecDef once she was prez.

“Mattis supported the Paris Climate Accords”

Obviously out of his policy area.

If Trump wishes to achieve his agenda and prosper politically, he has to stop surrounding himself with these globalist generals who will never withdraw from the debilitating foreign entanglements.

He made his reputation as a battle-field general, and he will always have that.

When he undercut Trump at the border, I thought then, he would have to go. Trump was trying to run a bluff there, to convince the caravan to turn around. He needed a big show of force. Instead, Mattis was telling everyone he was not going to use troops to patrol or anything else. Even if that were the reality, to say so out loud only encouraged the caravans.

So he needed to be fired, from that moment on. Trump only waited a few weeks to give him his dignity. When he took a shot at Trump in his resignation letter, though, he forfeited that consideration.

Sounds like Mattis was one of these guys who always believed he was smarter than his boss and could manipulate him. Then he ran up against Trump and found he couldn’t be rolled.

He may be helping the guy in retirement by bad-mouthing him.

The mightiest army in the world should be able to walk all over a puny country like Afghanistan

Mattis was given 6 months to get a job done, and didn’t do it.

How long should Trump wait?

Some question the hires of The Donald. Yes, many should not have happened but also when he does let one go we normally find out their deep swamp connections and that’s one more way of exposing the cabal...

I don’t believe in berating the hired help.

Some people are best forgotten.

Others should be thanked for giving things a good try.

Mattis is certainly the latter.

Insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting a different outcome. The pentagon has been horrible at the war in Afghanistan. They started that war on a promising and creative foot with the SF on horseback. We never bothered to locat and promote a kcal tribal leader to take the place of the much loved Masood. Instead we tried to launch a conventional war in a country that “conventional” was bound to bog down and lose.

Trump has an addiction to pettiness. Mattis is gone. Drop it. Move on. Trump does himself no good by getting into spitting matches with ex-subordinates. He gets into spitting matches with current subordinates as well, which is even worse. He's supposed to be the boss. He should act like it. Bosses don't get into twitter wars about subordinates. Bosses should support their subordinates -- Trump must have missed the downward loyalty lecture at Wharton -- and transfer or dismiss them sa decently as possible if they don't measure up. Corrections and disputes should be kept private. The constant soap opera about his own appointees is an unforced error.

I agree. This whole thing blew up when Trump correctly decided to get out of Syria. Obama already negotiated away all of our advantages and made it so that Trump would inherit a turd, getting out is the right thing.

Next step: announce that we’re getting out of Afghanistan, now that is one worthless conflict. Our job was done when we got bin Laden. For any posters that have flamed me over that, I’ve challenged them to tell me in 100 words or less what we’re doing there and why we should continue. I’m always met with crickets on that one.
