The union representing the United States' air traffic controllers is suing the Trump administration over pay that's frozen as part of the partial government shutdown.
The Federal Aviation Administration's air traffic controllers are among the 420,000 federal employees who have been deemed essential and have been ordered to work without pay during the shutdown, which began on Dec. 22 due to an impasse over funding for a wall along the U.S. southern border.
This story developing. Check back for updates.

> air traffic controllers are among the 420,000 federal employees who have been deemed essential and have been ordered to work without pay during the shutdown <
Wait a minute. When I first read the headline, I was quite prepared to bash the air traffic controllers.
But if the article is correct, they have a good point. If you demand (not ask, but demand) that people report to work, they should be paid for that day. And on the regular schedule. No “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.”
Maybe you just can’t pay them. Okay. And maybe air traffic controllers should be more public-spirited. But they are not the bad guys here.
Whoa!? If I'm employed as a .gov employee and the government closes....and I go on unemployment....and then when the government opens back up get full back pay, I would think that I would have to pay back the unemployment benefits.
Just saw BMcF’s post.
I am probably the one in error.
Fire them all. Just like Ronaldus Magnus did.
They should NOT be paid since they are not working. The very premise that they be paid for sitting at home is absurd. They should be on furlough without pay.
Essential staff are required to report for work and they will all be paid -eventually. Paychecks may be delayed until the budget impasse is resolved.
All of this has happened before in previous "shutdowns". Everybody gets paid, including the folks that were on furlough and not working. That is what will happen this time too.
The ones that get screwed are the contractors. They don't get paid for lost time, and if they are shut down long enough they will be permanently gone. Gotta pay the mortgage or the rent somehow.
Please see post #23.
I was mistaken.
Just curious ... If the FAA employees have a contract that says they must work under a deferred compensation arrangement when funding for their department is not available, then what is the basis of this lawsuit?
> I am not buying the without pay part. <
I’m sure that it is really “to be paid later”. So if an air traffic controller puts in 40 hours this week, he will be paid for those 40 hours. The only question is when.
“”Fine, send them home and bring in the national guard to do security temporarily. Then bring in civilian companies to do it. Its time for government to shrink.””
Would you want a novice in a control tower if you were flying in a B757 or B747 or any other commercial plane? Air traffic controllers aren’t working security jobs. You wouldn’t even want to take your expensive private jet up...
They keep giving Trump every opportunity to be more “Reagan- like”, don’t they.
Why sue Trump? He doeesn’t have the power of the purse...sue Congress.
“”They should NOT be paid since they are not working.””
They ARE working because they were deemed essential!!
As usual, leave it to NBC to lie about the reason for the suit and who it will really be aimed at.
In an article from Business Insider it states that the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) circulated a letter asking President Donald Trump, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to end the government shutdown. The flight attendants were joined by more than 30 other unions and organization from across the aviation industry, including the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA). They are asking both sides of the aisle to end the shutdown due to the operational and financial harm being done to workers and the traveling public.
It can be stopped immediately if Pelosi would agree to supply the funds, which they have, for the building of the wall that they were in agreement to build under the Obama administration in 2010, only better and more operational than the one first thought of. Lies, lies, lies

You are correct. My comment was in regard to non-essential workers. My mistake. Thanks.
Why aren’t they suing Congress?
How are flight attendants being affected by the shutdown?
Because they are executive brand employees.
I know I wouldnt love going without a paycheck but I could miss a month or two until the shutdown ended and get by. Its called adulting and having a contingency plan. Stuff happens. Its not like the government hasnt been shutdown before.

Why are airport controllers a federal position? They should be paid by the city the airport is in.
