His Grandfather was High Chief Peter Fanane Maivia. (yes his grandfather was a chief)
who was a wrestler and an actor.
Also his grandfather was a huge supporter of President Reagan.

To me, this is encouraging to hear, but not because I view it as a negative for him to identify as “black” as someone told me.

It means, if he hasn’t embraced it, one of two things:

His Samoan heritage means more to him than his Black heritage, OR...

He isn’t opportunistic in his use of the race card.
