McConnell blocks bill to reopen most of government

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) blocked legislation on Thursday that would have reopened most of the federal government impacted by the partial shutdown.

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) tried to get consent to take up a House-passed bill that would reopen all agencies except the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which is at the center of the shutdown fight. But McConnell objected.

The Senate GOP leader didn’t explain his objection from the Senate floor but he has warned for weeks that he will not bring up a government funding bill unless it’s the product of an agreement between congressional Democratic leadership and President Trump.

"The solution to this is a negotiation between the one person in the country who can sign something into law, the president of the United States, and our Democratic colleagues," McConnell said Tuesday when he blocked a House bill as well as a piece of legislation to fund DHS through Feb. 8.

It’s marks the third time that McConnell has blocked House-passed government funding bills in the past two weeks.

Roughly a quarter of the government has been shut down since Dec. 22, forcing roughly 800,000 federal employees to work without pay or be furloughed.

McConnell is the guy who blocked then President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee for 10 months in the face of overwhelming odds against him, at a time when there was practically no hope of EVER being recused.

Nuts to you.

And I suppose the likes of McConnell only think about themselves not the future of the party. They are probably retiring soon so could care less and see the GOP as just a vehicle to personal power and pleasure.

I can’t say what is in the hearts of men, but can say it appears that we need a constitutional ammendnment, when people elect a president, he gets 4 items to accomplish, and the congress must negotiate in good faith to achieve some form of those goals during the 4 years of his presidency, depending on the composition of the congress will determine the limits, 0 is not acceptable, each goal must be accomplished in some form, right now the people vote for specific ideas, they are not enacted in the sludge of mini trades to go somewhere, that’s why we have no wall now..so the peoples will are not done even with elections..

I don’t know how you would write a constitutional amendment like that. If you did try & succeed it would open the door for a multitude of muddled difficult to interpret amendments.

If you want to blame someone blame the voters!
They don’t take the franchise seriously. Too many of them think that voting for candidate A will deliver utopia, make them sexy & make their breath smell minty clean.

Way too many people and candidates have no “skin in the game” voting to them is like voting for prom king & queen.

Term limits would be a much cleaner solution. A decade in DC is enough! Time to send the politician home and have him/her experience his/her governing genius first hand!

Two terms in the Senate (12 years close enough to a decade without doing to much violence to the Constitution!). Then sit out a full term before you can return to the Senate.

Five terms in the House (10 years) then must sit out 3 terms (6 years) before one can return to the House.

Note I am assuming you will never get rid of the professional politician so I am putting something in the proposal for him/her. I have nothing against rewarding a successful term with a chance to repeat at least once!

Above all go home !!! If one must be a professional politician go home run for governor, county commissioner, mayor, etc. Maybe just maybe get a real job ! Above all go home! No hanging around DC in a Beltway PR or law firm! Go home!

We the public need to stop voting for people who have done nothing but politics! We have way too many politicians who couldn’t find their home districts or states with a map!

This is the secret of the hate for Trump he breaks the paradigm that the professional politician is necessary!

yea but do you not agree that the spirit of bipartisan cooperation is gone within the party ideologies, so the intent spoken of does not occur and no longer is working, 20 million illegals and we are not sure to remove them, illegal servers etc and nothing done in doj, its gone and will take some hard steps to fix it, so the people never get what they vote for anyway..it is failing before our eyes

Bipartisanship has always existed more as a myth then a reality. Look at the early Republic, the Civil War, Reconstruction, etc. It existed to some extent from WWI until recent history. There was never a time when the average long serving self-serving politician served the people more then himself.
