Trump: I will deliver State of the Union 'when the shutdown is over
The Hill ^ | January 23, 2019 | MARY TYLER MARCH

President Trump said late Wednesday that he would deliver his State of the Union address after the ongoing partial government shutdown is over.

"As the Shutdown was going on, Nancy Pelosi asked me to give the State of the Union Address," Trump wrote in a tweet. "I agreed. She then changed her mind because of the Shutdown, suggesting a later date. This is her prerogative - I will do the Address when the Shutdown is over."

Trump clarified earlier statements suggesting he may do an “alternative” State of the Union, writing that he was not seeking an alternative venue because "there is no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber."

"I look forward to giving a “great” State of the Union Address in the near future!" he added.

Trump just lost a large percentage of his supporters. Me included.

What a ridiculous statement to make. Any "supporter" who would abandon President Trump over this tactical decision was never a supporter in the first place. President Trump is in a much better position to see things that we cannot, and to take actions that are also hidden from public view. He has the best performance track record of any president in our lifetimes, so I'm willing to trust his judgment on timing, venue and surrounding circumstances of this year's State of The Union address.

If the Republican Party actually had Trump’s back for once, this probably wouldn’t have happened.

expenditures for various things will leak out gradually. It will look like any other extensions.

The wall will not be built unless he declares an emergency.

If he declares the dems will block him in court.

If it is block the won’t build before the election.

If Buzzy Ginsberg lives till next year, Trump is toast.

If he doesn’t put Hillary in jail, build the wall, I for one will not vote for him. What would be the point?

Hannity needs to call trump tonight and talk some sense to him. The optics are not good here. We need a win out of this.

When those 800,000 people start losing their homes, it's not going to be a win for Trump...The Donald will feint to the left, and then a jump to the right...

There are some Freepers who love to condemn, put down, revile and slur fellow Freepers, usually for completely absurd reasons, even though the terms of membership explicitly say that we are not to insult or cast aspersions at each other.

There are those who will not tolerate any criticism of Trump. Some disappointment is certainly understandable here.

The SOTU would have been a prime venue for making the case for The Wall, with all its theatrics and full TV coverage.

Totally agree. It would be excellent for making the case for The Wall *plus* how Pelosi and the democRATs won't even come to the table to make a deal with President Trump.

I don't understand why he's doing this...?

By what date?

Lot of overreactions to this.

Trump is up to something. Trust the long game.

RGB is about to croak if the pneumonia rumors are true. He will have that pick and fight on his hands.

He’s using the ‘shutdown’ (just 25% of govt) to trim the fat. Look for big cuts coming up next.

No it absolutely does NOT “sound good” at all!

ok. I thought it through. If he gives an alternate sotu then Nancy wins. This way - SHE owns the failure of the tradition. Also, now he is free to hold a major rally on that night and not be accused of cheapening the sotu. Think about it.

I think the SOTU was unnecessary distraction. While he could have found a great venue and did a SOTU to 75-100K people, it would be political theatre. Probably best to keep the focus on the wall funding. I am most concerned that he gets the money to build the wall—gets all of it would be even better than the $5.7B—and does not give amnesty or his this-is-not-amnesty version, which is still amnesty. That is bigger issue.

Agree with your post. Nancy now owns the shutdown and the shutdown of the tradition. Also, now he is free to hold a rally on the same night instead and not be accused of cheapening the event. Trump is always 10 steps ahead.
