During the struggle. Can’t tell for sure which of the officers was able to shoot him. He fired at least twice at the officer who was further away. Had the other officer not pushed that gun toward the ground, it could have been a sad outcome. He only missed by a few inches.

Landeros enrolled one of the daughters in the school several days before the incident without informing the ex-wife, Perlow said. Landeros’ ex-wife learned of this and brought custody paperwork to the school. The school called Timm, the school resource officer, following the district’s practice of calling in law enforcement to mediate custody disputes. The school also called Landeros. Johns, another school resource officer, responded when Timm called for assistance.”

The Fox News video at the link is actually batter.

They describe what’s going on as it happens.

The fact that he yelled “Go,” to presumably his kid tells me that he intended to do some shooting.
