George Orwell was determined to really find out how the working class really lived. He, low on funds, beat his way up to impoverished Northern England in the 1930's. His classic book was titled "The Road to Wigan Pier". It was a working jetty. A sarcastic remark made by persons when asked "where do you go for your holidays?"- Wigan Pier.

To his chagrin he noted that some of those who championed the cause of the poor got elected to council. The first thing they did when they got extra monies was to put lace curtains in their windows. Orwell wrote that they considered themselves now "middle class". He was not impressed.

Hope my rambles do get excused here.
