Actually, I think they are just looking to see if He had purchased identical rope in the recent past, which if true, would cast even more doubt on his story. Yet, that piece of rope could have come from a coil that had been sitting in his, or a friends, back room for years.

True. I have a couple rolls of rope/cord in my garage that have been there for years, and which were partially used for various gardening purposes. But I'm not sure if an urban apartment dweller would have much use for rope.
If he did have rope, he'd have ditched it by now, but its absence would be significant if they could prove he had recently purchased the kind of rope that was used in the alleged attack.
