Bah, they will never say it's a lie. They will, at best, do what they are doing (which is leak some news that makes it look like they think it's fishy or at least there are too many open questions to properly investigate it) and declare that sadly, this terrible hate crime will go unpunished unless some new evidence is uncovered. And that will be that.
In the meantime small bit players will notice the notoriety Mr. Smollett is getting and think "hmmmm. To get that level of fame all I'd need to do is say ... " you get the idea.

The media sure did jump to conclusions before the story was fully vetted.They always do. Always. Despite the fact that probably 99% of these types of stories since, oh, 2009 have been #FakeNews. But it does show that Obama and ValJar have been busy behind the scenes.

Police say they’re trying to determine the origin of the rope that was used in the alleged attack. Detectives are looking into where it came from or where it may have been purchased. Can anyone remember this type of effort being spent on any other simple battery, even if it had a "hate crime" element attached to it? For pete's sake, he even brought a sandwich home ON VIDEO after supposedly suffering this horrible attack that broke (or bruised) his ribs. he got mugged and held on to his phone as he was talking with his manager ? maybe he had ear buds ? course no mention of those.
today, it was reported his neighbors don't believe him.
It's also been reported that a spit-load of Chicago Police are working on this plus the FBI...I'm guessing they will not bail either way on this.
I also read the phone records have subpoenaed. The only one reporting this is VOAT
