Ukraine looks to have faced down both the Kremlin and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe over the issue of Russian election observers at its presidential election in March.
The OSCE was forced to change stance after Ukraine adamantly refused to accept Russian observers of the March 31 vote, and its parliament on Feb. 7 passed a law banning them from being accredited to the OSCE mission.
Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir, director of the OSCE ODIHR, said in a statement issued by the organization on Feb. 7 that she regretted the Ukrainian authorities decision. She said that observers sent to take part in election observations missions do not represent their respective countries, but rather the entire OSCE.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin in a statement on Twitter on Feb. 8 said it was wrong to let the citizens from a country that was de facto waging war on Ukraine observe its elections.
Official observers from Russia the aggressor state have no place in observing the elections in country who is a victim of such an aggression, Klimkin wrote. Even trying to suggest it is politically, morally and legally wrong. Full stop.

Great. Here comes the election fraud.
“...Great. Here comes the election fraud...”
It will be less fraudulent than Russian elections, Southside Chicago elections, and Lowndes County, Alabama elections.
Combine this story with the news that the pudgy Chocolate King is trailing in the polls to a comedian and you might be on to something.
I believe comrade Wonka is a write-off for his handlers. Doesn’t mean he won’t try to steal 15-20% of the votes. I believe we’ll see the gas princess comeback in one form or another.
I don’t know what the big deal is.
It’s not like they’re going to have a real election where any candidate has an opportunity to make their respective case.
“It will be less fraudulent than Russian elections, Southside Chicago elections, and Lowndes County, Alabama elections.”
Nonsense.
Nobody believes that, anywhere.
Their last election was held in Victoria Nuland’s living room.
The question is would they have another fabulous revolution? It sucks to be a banana republic but without both bananas and republic.
You had better believe it because election fraud in this country stole several congressional seats and the Alabama Senate seat.
Having Russian observers at any Ukrainian election is like asking Al Sharpton to “observe” at an “All you can eat free buffet”.
Good..keep the Russian filth out of Ukraine.
Putin causes 13,000 dead with 2-3 million refugees in the ongoing war against Ukraine in Donbas and OSCE thinks its a good idea to send in Russian election observers?
I'm not sure of that anymore, Washington and Brussels seem to be having second thoughts...more at the link.
The article is factually correct but it wrongly implies that US and Euro backing is essential to get public support. Tymoschenko politics correctly described in the article are mostly reflective to public opinion. Which has turned suspicious towards Western institutions.
I am not saying she would make into presidents but I don’t see any influential figure to fill the void.
Saakashvili? Won’t make it. Klitch? You are kidding. Maybe someone of oligarchs? Kolomoyski? I don’t think he finds it interesting. Porki proved it is not good for business overall as he turned into a sort of pariah.
“Great. Here comes the election fraud.”
Oh, right...because if only the paragons of integrity and honesty called the Russians were present then and only then would the world be assured of clean and fair elections in Ukraine...a county the damned Russians keep scheming to conquer again.
Now don’t forget to collect your paycheck from Comrade Putin.
The current front runner is dark horse candidate Vladimir Zelensky, who is a millennial aged television personality with no previous political experience.
If Zelensky makes it into the second round, there’s a good chance he’ll win the election as an outside/reformer.
Yes, of course. It is clear he won’t be a real leader. Who would be behind him is a question. Tymoshenko might be one of such people but it is just one of many possibilities.
