The problem for them as politicians is that they live in an echo chamber. When they get out into the world, they are surprised to find their beliefs are offensive to everyone. FGM is acceptable to them. Feminism is not. LGBT is offensive to them. Terrorism is not.
That doesn’t work well in the “real” world of politics. The hijab is a symbol of patriarchal oppression, even if you say it isn’t.
